Now they’re working at this coffee shop by the university where Steve studies art and the college kids make Bucky feel about ninety years old.
Well, all of them except for Steve’s new friend Natasha — hazelnut cappuccino, for here — who sits by the back table poring over thick poli sci books. She’s got a wicked little smile that makes him think there’s more to her than cardigans and crossword puzzles, but what does he have to offer that she couldn’t get somewhere else?

It’s patently obvious that Naruto doesn’t believe a word of it. “You never run from anything, Iruka-sensei,” Naruto says in a quiet, pained voice. “Ever. What are you running from?”
Iruka unconsciously rubs his chest. After Hinata had reminded him, he couldn’t seem to push the discomfort from his mind. He tossed and turned all night, the pain heavy on his heart, like a large hand wrapped around his chest and squeezing. Pain like this had become almost second nature during his year of marriage, but now he’s noticing it again.
He’s not the only one who notices. A dark look like a stormcloud crosses Naruto’s face as his eyes trace the way Iruka’s hand presses against his sternum. “Iruka-sensei,” Naruto says again, more slowly, more firmly, “What did he do?”
“It’s nothing he did,” Iruka says, shutting his eyes. He doesn’t want to see the look on Naruto’s face when he speaks his next words. “He just doesn’t … love me.”
He hears a sharp intake of breath, followed by a low growl, and the rustle of clothes. When he opens his eyes, Naruto is on his feet, breakfast completely forgotten. “That’s stupid,” Naruto says, hands balled in fists.
Iruka can’t lift his head to meet Naruto’s eyes, but he can feel the way he looks at him.
“Everyone loves you,” Naruto says, his voice cracking. “Why wouldn’t he?”
Iruka just shakes his head helplessly.
Several long seconds pass, and then Naruto gingerly seats himself back at the table. “So you left,” he says quietly.
“I couldn’t stay,” Iruka admits, and is horrified to realize that tears are crowding the corners of his eyes. “I needed, I need - ” he can’t continue, but it turns out to be enough. Naruto practically throws himself across the table, wrapping his arms around Iruka’s shoulders, holding him.

It’s been twelve years since the divorce, and it’s the first anniversary morning since the fateful day that Iruka wakes up feeling a deep-seated ache in his chest. He presses his sternum, frowning, but the ache doesn’t go away. Fuck.He goes to work, as usual, and sees new flowers in his vase. Another pain, this one almost stabbing, shoots through him. He’s never felt like this, not since he and Kakashi parted. He knew they’d been growing closer again (how many times must he pull away, only to be drawn back into this foolish dance?), but he hadn’t realized just how close.
A soft rap at his door, and Iruka says, “Come in.”
Kakashi steps through the doorway, eschewing his usual window entrance.
Iruka looks up at him, is surprised to see how haggard he looks. “Kakashi-san,” he says, “are you well?” There’s a question in his eyes. A question Iruka recognizes. One he hasn’t seen there in a long, long time.
Kakashi swallows hard, and asks, “Are you?”
It’s not the question he wants to ask. And, Iruka realizes, with a mixture of surprise and trepidation, it’s not the question he wants Kakashi to ask, either. “No,” he says, tentatively. “I don’t think I am.”
“I don’t think I am, either,” Kakashi admits, his voice just barely this side of breaking. His hand is resting on his breastbone, pressing like maybe pressure will mask the ache he must be feeling there.
