It wasn't every day Gaster actually had an answer to an ultimatum he presented himself with. And it's certainly unprecedented that the choices end up moot as a result of forces outside of his carefully articulated power.
He ultimately deserves it, really. It's only natural, for a villain like him— A reminder that always chased his conscious; judgement, punishment, isolation. Might as well do it himself before the weight of the decree kills him at the end of the road.

When you aren't in the lab being smart, you're gathering materials at the abandoned doll factory for the machine you're trying to build.
But one night, you meet a skeleton at the factory. Naturally, you lie about why you're there and say you're there to hunt ghosts. You befriend him and try to find a way to gather the materials while keeping up with that lie. But those lies catch up to you when you start to meet all the other skeletons.

I, as a beta tester had been on the verge of death far more than I would like to admit. Then, a blessing. Skeleton NPCs showed up and took guard, allowing me to sleep through the night without worrying someone would try to kill me.

It was bound to be noticed eventually, especially with the guard being as well trained as they are. He stood no chance to find a proper meal, not anymore. That is, until he remembered a certain coworker with a not so subtle crush on him. A few well placed sweet words earn him a permament blood source, but also a newforming dillema. How to keep a relationship he had built solely on lies.
Or: XGaster is hungry enough to get desperate and pretend to like reader back just to get to eat. It backfires because he catches feelings and then gets hit with consequences of his own actions when it turns out he indeed can't have his cake and eat it too.
