“It takes more to take me down,” Ilya tells her, and he isn’t wrong except that he’s also not right because he’s mostly besides himself, Svetlana would wager. At least she had been, in his place one and a half years ago. They’ve always been too similar, in certain ways.

I’m clinging to the muttered phrases I overheard around him on the ice—not spoken to me, but floating above the chaos as I strained to piece together any understanding of how badly he was hurt.
He’s breathing.
They’re taking him to the hospital.
We’ll let the coach know.I should have pressed harder. I should have followed the stretcher. I should have—
My phone buzzes again in my hand, sharper this time, and I realize it’s been ringing for several seconds already.
