“Don’t you want to-” Bret gestured out the window to his parents’ house, “-stay with your parents.”
Matt shook his head. “I’m embarrassed.”
“Embarrassed?”
“I shouldn’t have let that happen. I was too busy thinking about… something else.”
Bret couldn’t help but indulge in the notion that he had been that something else.
“They can’t be mad at you, though. Right?”
“You’d be surprised.” With one finger, Matt drew small, swirling patterns into the comforter. “A lot of people are disappointed by how I’ve wasted my potential.”

After the missing kids are safely returned home, Bret comes to visit Matt. TV show-based fanfic, but I see no reason why book fans couldn't enjoy it as slightly AU fic. If the TV show tag ever takes off I'll likely remove it.
