In a small town in northern Norway, late 2005, two broken teenage girls lead unhappy lives. Though they met briefly in late summer, it seemed but a mirage. Fraught with longing in the aftermath, they begrudgingly made peace with chilly solitude. But when meeting again on a dark fall evening, the need for warmth propelled them like a moth to the flame. Even when it’s frightening to dare, the flickering hope proves irresistible. It’s amazing how little kindness it takes, to save a life about to be snuffed out.
Are they able to let shadows of their pasts go, to make room for each other? Can their families and peers handle the stubbornness and naivety of youth? Is this small town prepared for something too beautiful to hide away? Will an emerging bond of golden thread be enough, in a world already proven to be so very cruel?

First, she'd see herself. Young. Fresh out of the ground. Shado picks her up, and her arms are the first affection Emiko knows. There is nothing but love in Shado's eyes, despite the scars around her face and the weariness she carries. She presses a single kiss to Emiko's forehead, and another to her gem. Shado sees Emiko as someone precious. Despite being only a carnelian, an ordinary soldier, Shado had decided Emiko was worth something.
In a Steven Universe AU, Shado adopted Emiko as a young soldier. During the gem war, Emiko lost Shado to gem corruption. A bit of a study on this universe, and Emiko's feelings on everything.
