"Cicadas spend the vast majority of their seventeen-year life cycles underground. They chew on roots for the better part of two decades, crawl up trees, Cronenberg/Kafka into enormous flies, tear out of their alien shells, scream for two months, and die. I guess cicada days could either be a long time spent growing but not emerging, or they could be days spent struggling to become something new that doesn’t quite pan out so great, or they could be the two months of screaming. Or maybe it’s the height of summer, or the days when you can’t stand the noise outside. I guess I don’t really know. But the words feel kind of right to say."
Will Byers and Mike Wheeler have spent a semester at different colleges in Manhattan. After five months of no contact, they're about to meet back in Hawkins for winter break. Will has spent the semester growing but not quite emerging as he struggles to become someone new. Mike has just been screaming.

Summary
Jonathan and Steve loathe one another. One is a complete and utter weirdo, while the other is a cocky ladies' man. But the disappearance of Will Byers and Steve's own boredom consequently leads them to one another on a fateful, rainy day.
After learning how Will's disappearance is affecting Jonathan, Steve decides that he needs to repent for how he's treated the other in the past. Despite how the two originally felt about one another, they decide to join forces for a few days to find Will. But those few days end up lasting much, much longer than they initially planned.

Summary
Will needs a date to his mom's wedding. Mike volunteers.
“I have an idea,” says Mike.
Ice cubes form in Will’s stomach. “How dangerous is it? Like, should I call Dustin to talk you down, or should I call Nancy to be ready to drive us to the hospital?”
“No,” says Mike, “you can’t tell anyone or it won’t work.”
“Or what won’t work?” Will asks. It’s like picking up a rock you know a spider will be under.
Mike gets up and closes Will’s door. Hopper doesn’t make them keep it open but sometimes Will does anyway, because every now and then lying around alone with Mike on his bed just makes his chest ache too much. If the door is open he can tell himself You can’t do anything right now, someone will see.
Mike leans back against the door. His eyes are lit up with that special maniacal gleam that the Wheelers get right before they do something insane, like when Nancy says, “Then we have to go kill Vecna ourselves,” or whatever. “Take me to the wedding,” says Mike.
“Yeah,” says Will slowly, “you’ll be at the wedding. Obviously.”

The confusion went on as they kept talking amongst themselves, random names–Max, Henry, El–and references she didn't understand. The only relief Barb had was that everyone else in the cafeteria was just as miffed as she was, eyes wandering towards the odd group that Barb was apparently stuck with.
The fight with Vecna goes wrong, but everyone gets sent back in time to 1983. The Fruity Four don't give enough fucks to act like their past selves.
