Summary
The only way to see someone's true nature is to see how they act when they don't know they're being watched. The girls catch moments between Qifrey and Olruggio that help them decide on their future as apprentices.
OR: Before they're official apprentices of Qifrey's atelier, the girls accidentally (on purpose) stumble upon Qifrey and Olruggio when the two men think they're alone. It tells the girls everything they need to know about the kind of witches (and people) they are.

Summary
The sound that pulled him from sleep was different.
It was quiet enough that, at first, he mistook it for the wind. A thin, uneven breath came from the other side of the bed, followed by the faint rustle of blankets being clutched too tightly. Olruggio’s eyes opened to darkness. He lay still for several seconds, listening, before another breath caught sharply in Qifrey’s throat.
Then came a muffled sob.
Olruggio was awake at once. “Qifrey?”
Or...
Olruggio wakes up to Qifrey crying from pain he got from an injury in the past so of course Olruggio takes care of him as well as Brushbuddy of course. Queue the sappiness and fluffiness.

Summary
It was quiet, and when Olruggio’s head raised he saw that ever-present look on Qifrey’s face again.
The one where he looked hesitant, a little bit displaced, and so startingly unsure of himself.
“Olly, I’m...” he started, awkwardly trailing off as his hand traced to the top of his cap. “You know I don’t do too well with being... celebrated.”
He spoke the words as if the mere thought of it made him uncomfortable, his shoulders hunching up as he coiled that ribbon tight around his finger.
Olruggio reached between them.
“Of things worth celebrating,” he murmured, catching the ribbon with his finger and gently pulling it loose. “You being born is at the very top of my list.” He leveled Qifrey with a look. “Understand?”
Qifrey nodded slow as if in a daze, whispering out a hushed, “Yes,” as he watched Olruggio weave the ribbon between his fingers.
Or
Qifrey’s birthday comes around again, but this year Olruggio hoped to make it a bit more memorable.
Whether Qifrey liked it or not.

“And my hands hurt!” Her voice cracks. She frantically tries to pick the glass up again. Qifrey struggles to grab her hands.
“Don’t- Agott-“ He said in a slightly panicked voice. “Sweetheart put it down.”
She pushes him away slightly and lets her hands fall to her knees. She sniffles and blinks back her tears but they fall nonetheless.
Qifrey takes a long look at her. Her sunken eyes, cheeks beginning to hollow, pale skin, panicked sweat.

Olruggio hums neutrally. “And what do you tell them?”
“That I’m not your keeper,” Qifrey says, his acrid words unraveling a tight curl of possessiveness, “Though you’re mine.”
A proper Watchful Eye must remain impartial and loyal to the Great Hall first and foremost, no matter how much they love their charge.
Or; Qifrey wonders how long Olruggio can successfully balance his duty and his heart.

Summary
There it was, that thing Qifrey did, where he offered a piece of himself wrapped in observation about someone else, like a gift hidden inside a gift, and you had to decide whether to unwrap the second layer or pretend you had only received the first. Olruggio had spent half his life learning to read these offerings and in doing so he had become the foremost scholar of a language spoken by exactly one person in all the world.
"I'm stubborn because someone has to be," he said. "You'd float away on your own mysteries if no one kept you tethered."
"Perhaps." The maddingly sad smile again. "Perhaps that's so."
In which Olruggio brings tea to Qifrey's study on a damp evening and finds him working in the dark again, the staff out and the fire dying.

Olruggio walked forward quickly, setting his candle down on the table. "Why didn't you cast a protection spell? Or do quite literally anything else? I can see how uncomfortable you are."
"Well, you aren't the Watchful Eye for nothing, my friend," Qifrey answered, chuckling humourlessly to himself before dissolving into another coughing fit.
"I am being serious here," Olruggio insisted gruffly, grabbing Qifrey's wrist to stop him from unloading the bags. A quiet anger was starting to bubble up inside of him. The notion that Qifrey could just putter on, overexerting himself and pushing through his most potent discomfort for seemingly no good reason was maddening.

When a drenched Qifrey returns to the Atelier in the middle of the night, the Watchful Eye is less than pleased.

"If I were unwell, would you have me fend for myself?" Qifrey interrupted, his voice quick and firm as he affixed his piercing blue eye into Olruggio's.
"Of course not, but-"
"Then I will not be doing the same to you," he insisted as he leant closer, his grip on Olruggio's wrists loosening, but not releasing completely. "Look, Olly. You're trembling." Sure enough, whether from his body temperature, lack of sleep, or a secret third thing, Olruggio's body was wracked with subtle shivers that radiated through his arms into Qifrey's hands. Gently letting go of his wrists, Qifrey instead held one of his hands gently between the two of his own, looking up with his most imploring look. "Please," he asked quietly, his thumb grazing over the ridges on the back of Olruggio's hand. "Please allow me to take care of you."

Summary
Kanji Tatsumi and Naoto Shirogane have faced their other selves and accepted them as reality. However, acceptance is not comfort, and the circumstances surrounding their outings are too much for any person to process alone. Perhaps that's how Kanji manages to work up the courage to offer Naoto advice, man-to-man--and perhaps that's why Naoto feels inclined to hear him out.
Or alternatively, Naoto's arc would look very different if he knew top surgery existed.
