Summary
When Darry Curtis was a senior in high school, an unexpected war erupted on the other side of the world. What he thought would be a gap year to work and save money for college turned into being drafted overseas for a nine month deployment. Little did he know, a month later a tragic accident would occur, leaving his two brothers in the custody of the state. All three boys are left to grieve alone, worlds away from their only remaining family. They’re all each other have left, but what do they have left to fight for when they’re worlds apart?

"What the fuck do you mean he's just gone?!" Sodapop shouts, standing from the couch in outrage. "He was on the site with you and your crew all day! You said his truck's still parked there for God's sake!" Soda says, throwing his arms up in the air.
"Like I said, boys," the burly man says, rubbing his forehead in both frustration and distress. "He went on lunch and he just never came back. We searched the entire building top to bottom and we found nothing. Nobody saw him come or go. He's just-" he says, not bothering to finish the sentence before dropping his head in defeat.
Soda huffs again.
"Well, he didn't just fall off the face of the Earth!"

The Curtis brothers have a language older than words.
It sounds like morning coffee going cold, like a hand in hair, like someone trying very hard not to smile. Ponyboy is fourteen and writing at the kitchen table and has absolutely no idea what he looks like in October light.
Soda is trying not to say too much.
Darry is already a ghost who would burn the world down twice.Just a Tuesday morning in a house that smells like woodsmoke and almost-touched things.
