If Xie Lian were forced to describe the night to anyone, he’d say he’d been turned into a musical instrument that Hua Cheng had played at a virtuoso level, three times in a row—taking his time with the buildup, climbing to crescendos and then reversing them, and, finally, soaring toward a blinding climax so slowly and steadily that Xie Lian had cried actual tears, begging for mercy.
He’s very close, the steam making his amber eyes a little hazy.
“Always,” Hua Cheng says, pushing a stray lock of hair out of Xie Lian’s face. “Anything like this. Only ever at your invitation.”
“Go to sleep; I won’t do anything.”
Xie Lian speaks again, this time at length and in a completely unknown language. It has dips and rises in intonation and even a mood, which seems to be annoyed. Hua Cheng patiently listens with all of his attention, then kisses the top of his head.
“You’re absolutely right about everything. Now sleep.”
“I want you,” he pushes out in a low, breathless voice. “How are you real? I want you so badly. Please, I need to have you again—please.”
Xie Lian gulps for air, disoriented, head spinning. “I won’t be able to walk tomorrow as it is—”
“Then I’ll carry you anywhere you need to go,” Hua Cheng promises fervently, already pushing between his thighs. “I’ll be careful this time, just let me. Please let me, please, please.”
Xie Lian doesn’t know that Hua Cheng treats all that he considers his that way, and isn’t Xie Lian the most his to take care of?
"Your mirrors lie to you; my paintings don’t."
He wants everyone to know what happened here, and he would kill anyone who found out. He’s despicable; Xie Lian had rushed off, not letting Hua Cheng take care of him, not even lingering behind for a single kiss, and that’s unacceptable, and Hua Cheng still feels like this. Trash. Selfish trash. He can’t stop grinning.
Hua Cheng stares at the lake, not quite feeling his body. The site is perfect; this place is perfect. If he looks for eight hundred years, he won’t find a more suitable one. This place is alive, even, and it calls to him. He should feel happy that he’d found it, grateful that Xie Lian is keeping his promise. Why does he wish instead Xie Lian had never made it in the first place?
Why does he feel as if someone just walked over his grave?
Hua Cheng realizes, with a strange despair, that he wants to be there each step of the way. He wants to support that fledging faith, to nourish it as best he can. He wants to be there through every relapse and every struggle; he wants to witness every victory, big or small. The good days, the bad days, the days not to be touched for fear of shattering—he’s greedy, and he wants them all. He doesn’t want Xie Lian to do this alone, and he can’t stand the thought of him leaning on anyone else.
Acknowledging that you’ve outgrown your dream isn’t the same as betraying it.
“No. Originally, I thought that breaking you and taking you down with me could be my crowning achievement when I was ready to punch out. Alas, I used my chance instead for something like this; tragic.”
That’s… about what he’d thought. Hua Cheng smirks. “So our time together has been good for you, huh?”
He takes a step closer, tilting his chin up. “And he has me.” A smile spreads over his split lips; he doesn’t stop it. “You wanted to have me? You wanted to fuck me? You could only force me and you needed an army to hold me down. Him, I beg.”
He wraps his arm around Xie Lian’s back, cranes his neck to press his lips to the crown of his head, and breathes, and breathes, getting drunk on this tactile proof of life—not Xie Lian’s so much as his own. He’d never realized that holding your life in your hands could be so literal. Had reality taken a different turn last night, Hua Cheng would not have survived.
“You’re staring,” Xie Lian says flatly, taking a sip of water to wash the pills down.
Hua Cheng can’t help it. “You’re beautiful.”
That makes Xie Lian finally look at him. His lips twist. “Like this?”
“Yes, like this,” Hua Cheng confirms, taking the glass from him and setting it on the nightstand. “Like this, you’re the most beautiful I’ve ever seen you, because last night, I thought I’d never see you alive again.” He holds Xie Lian’s eyes. “But you’re here. You’re alive. And you’re beautiful.”
“I love you. I belong to you. If you want me.” He smiles. “I belong to you even if you don’t.”
