He was supposed to get an offer to box at RCU. Instead - he became the school joke. The guy who always came up short. The guy that made both of their exes like each other. The guy that had his reputation damaged because of that.
Mako was done. He was done with her. Done with his problems. Done with high school and certainly not going to college after not getting an offer. A opportunity to escape from it all presented itself and he took it -

A opportunity that had its upsides. Iroh was one of those, a former competitor that turned into one of his closets brother-in-arms. Feeling achieved and having purpose was also big one... but most of all, being able to see anybody he so pleases to forget the sleeping pressure back home was a second.
But, again, there was sure to have downsides... downsides that would eventually land him back to the start of one of his main problems he so dearly ran away from.

It's raining when he comes back on a Friday night, raindrops pelting the small overhang in slates. The sky glistens like diamonds against black velvet, and Mako doesn't know why he smells wet cardboard and flooded dumpsters. The cat is present as always, face buried in her paws as she stretches in the barrier between the outside world and Mako's living place.
Mako sighs. His body hurts for reasons he's not sure of, feels small and aching and too skinny for his bones despite being more financially stable than he's been his entire life.
"Come on," he tells the cat, opening the gate and widening the door further than he normally does.

Not that it really surprised him at this point. Winters especially were unforgiving.Ever since he lost his parents, it's been only him and his brother. Mako swore he would protect him with every breath he had, after all, Bolin was all he had left. He would do everything to make sure he was safe. And the Triple Threat Triad knew that.
Bolin makes for a great bargaining chip.

Mako is a terrible brother. He knows he is.
He tried. He really, really tried to be the best brother he could be to Bolin after losing their parents. From protecting him from the scum of Republic City, to earning money from the Triple Threat Triad by running numbers for them so they won’t starve, to even saving his life a few times over the years, he was always there for his brother.
Of course, he wasn’t perfect. No-one is. He has done some stuff he isn’t particularly proud of which ended up hurting his younger sibling, but they always mended up and hugged it out at the end of the day. They were still brothers who always looked out for each other.
But not this time. This time, he has damaged their relationship beyond repair and Bolin doesn’t even know it. Neither does everyone else in their found-family.
All except one. Opal, his brother’s wife. His sister-in-law.
His sister-in-law who he’s sleeping with.
