“Why? You don’t want your little fan club to hear?” She scowled up at him with the intensity of a fawn, which was just too adorable to scare Carter.
He stopped walking and turned to face her, even though he wasn’t sure why he was trying to explain any of this to her with the state she was in right now. But if he wasn’t wrong, he’s quite sure that the last part she spewed was out of jealousy.
Carter scoffed in disbelief, a small smile growing, keeping note to tease Deb about this when she’s sober enough to be embarrassed. He tucked his hands in his coat pockets for a moment. “Oh, right, I’m sure the guy you met on the L would love to hear you bragging about my-” What was he doing?! Carter clicks his tongue, almost disappointed at himself for trying to have such a debate with Deb, who wasn’t coherent enough to talk rationally about his Valentine’s Day cards and... that guy. Blonde, he thinks bitterly to himself. Ridiculous.

“I could quiz you,” he offered, the words out before he'd thought them through. He finally got up from the couch, grabbing his coat as he had already changed out of his lab coat 30 minutes ago.
She looked at him then, really looked, and something in her expression softened. "You’d do that?"
"Sure. I mean, I should probably review it too. Benton might kill me with one look if I don’t know the mechanisms by Friday.” He joked, pulling on his coat and fixing the collar. He’s not sure why he still offered. To be honest, he’d be lying if he said Deb never got on his nerves every now and then, with the subtle and playful rivalry between them. In fact, he’s sure she’d do just fine without his help.
Or in which John Carter and Deb Chen put aside their unofficial rivalry to study. Or at least try to.

An ER (1994) one-shot fic starring Sick Peter Benton and Well-Behaved-Bottoms-Seldom-Make-History John Carter.
Peter Benton is sick. There are no ifs or buts about it. John Carter takes it upon himself (with a lot of help from the rest of the department's staff) to prevent Benton from overworking himself before it starts to effect the patients. Carter has watched Benton struggle stubbornly through sickness far too many times and may have to take more serious measures to intervene.

So this one-shot is actually part of an extract from my crossover with The Pitt fic – A Change of Direction – Chapter 34. But I loved writing it – including spending time re-watching the end of Be Still My Heart and beginning of All In The Family – it’s basically Carter’s POV from when he gets stabbed up to when he’s rolled into the elevator by Benton. Please comment and read my other fic which is ongoing.
Note: I decided to extend this to 3 chapters to include an extra, which is from Dr. Kerry Weaver’s POV when she opens the door and finds Carter and Lucy. So chapters 1 & 3 are from Carter’s POV, chapter 2 is Kerry’s POV.
