The uneasy shifting has become a gentle sway, a stumble. He's knocked over a kidney dish on the countertop he was leaning against, and now he's blinking quickly, swiping at a forehead Jing-Mei realises is… ashen.

Well, maybe friend wasn’t quite the right word, but it seemed as good as any. What do you call the guy who you met when he brought his daughter into the ER, ended up working at said ER, flirted with her so obviously that even Mel could tell, invited her to hang out a few times but didn’t call it a date, and kissed her on the cheek three separate times. But that didn’t really mean anything. She had done the same thing with Frank tons of times, Samira had even told her that Frank flirted with her sometimes. But he was married, even if he flirted, it wasn’t serious. Dave was single.

Mel was used to being assigned any case involving kids. She was good with them, much better than she was with adults. The fact that she ended up dealing with more deaths of children definitely crossed her mind, but she didn’t think it occurred to anyone else. Because of all of the deaths she’s had to deal with, an overprotective father who brought in his daughter is a nice change of pace.
