Din Djarin didn’t ask for any of this. He didn’t ask to be cast out from his tribe, or to be the rightful wielder of the darksaber. More than anything, he certainly didn’t ask to be the Mand'alor to a group of people who didn’t even consider him to be one of their own anymore. The only thing he has asked for, in a long time, was redemption.
In order to find what he seeks, he has to retake Mandalore to reach the waters beneath the surface. The job is too big to do alone, but unfortunately, most of his friends are either busy or unavailable to accompany him. Though, there is one person that comes to mind…
Mayfeld’s life is chaotic, but he certainly never expected the astronomical odds of seeing the Mandalorian for a third time in his life. And, he certainly never expected to get a job offer from the shiny man, either. Though, he had to admit that working for Mando wasn’t the worst way for a dead man to spend his time.

Mando let out a sigh, turning back to the window, “This is the way.”
Mayfeld grit his teeth, wanting to say so much more, but holding himself back. Clearly, this was beyond his scope of understanding, and it meant a lot to Mando, so he didn’t want to say something disrespectful and make the guy who’d be paying him soon enough feel any worse. Instead, he flopped against the back of his chair, slouching angrily as he stared out into hyperspace.
He took in a deep breath, calming himself down as he cleared his mind of its negativity. Well, mostly. If Mando needed his help to feel better about being banished, then Mayfeld was determined to assist in any way he could. He knew better than most how something like that could eat a person up from the inside, and for some reason, he really didn’t want the Mandalorian to suffer that kind of pain.
He exhaled deeply, letting his eyes close for a moment before he found the peace to speak. “Alright, Mando. What do we need to do on Mandalore to help you get back into your tribe?”Mayfeld took a step forward, “Hey, no need to be a dick, lady. He ain't givin’ up his armor for anything! So, you can go ahead and try to take it, but rest assured, he and I are gonna wipe the floor with you.”
Din took a step, putting himself between Koska and Mayfeld, “Stop—there’s no need to fight.” He turned toward Mayfeld, “They’re both right. I need the mines reopened, and they need a Mand'alor to stand in for the time being. I think we should take the deal.”
Bo Katan folded her arms over her chest, “Did I hear a ‘we’? Are you planning to keep this mutt with you, Djarin?"He snatched Mayfeld’s wrist tightly, his breath ragged yet stern, “I'm not taking off my helmet.”
Mayfeld quirked his brow, “I never asked you to.” He leaned forward a little, until he was mere inches from Din’s visor, “Keep the damn thing on for all I care.”“Look Din,” Mayfeld stopped walking, turning his body toward the other, “far as I can see it, my job’s not done yet. I promised to get you a nice, refreshing, soul-cleansing bath in your fancy Mandalorian mine-water, and you ain't had one yet. Until then, I’ll keep my word and stick around.”
Din sighed, “This is all turning into more than I had in mind when I hired you. I don’t blame you if you want to leave.” He huffed, “Manda knows I would if I could.”
Mayfeld smiled, then started walking toward their rooms once again, “Nah, you're not gettin’ rid of me that easy. I think I’ll stay, if that’s alright.”Din couldn’t help but smile, “You took my advice, back in the tunnels, so I think it’s only fair that I take some of yours as well.” he swallowed thickly, “You were right, when you said that I was torturing myself. I still believe in my creed, but I don’t want to be afraid of it anymore, the way that I always have been. I think…I think I want to start living too.” He leaned in closer, “I think we can help each other to start living, together.”
It was beautiful, and Din was just grateful that he was able to witness it; even more grateful still that he could share all of this with someone he trusted. He and Mayfeld grew closer as the days went on, and before too long, Din was sure that most of the Mandalorians, numbering almost 200 now, had caught onto their affair. Not that they were super discreet, but it was a little embarrassing, knowing that everyone was onto what he and his bodyguard were up to.
Mayfeld didn’t seem affected by the glares or rumors in the slightest. If anything, the attention seemed to fuel him. He really only ever got mad when someone tried to drag Din’s name through the mud. He was protective and loyal in a way Din never would’ve expected of him, and being the one he was so devoted to quickly became an addictive feeling.“The people like you, Mayfeld. Only a few think of you as an outsider. I'm sure they’d be happy to keep you around.”
“No, they like you, and they tolerate me because of how much they respect you.” Mayfeld shook his head, “Your people are finally starting to like you—I'm not going to ruin that by sticking around and messing things up.”
Din reared his head back with offense, “You're not messing anything up by being here.”
“Oh really?” Mayfeld sneered, “Because last I heard, there were some rumors spreading about the Mand'alor ‘sullying himself’ with imperial trash.”
Din shook his head angrily, “I will find the root of those rumors, and make sure—”
“No! You don’t get it, Din. Those rumors? They’re right!” Mayfeld said, cutting him off.Din gave a small smile, though it quickly transformed into another sad frown. His brow furrowed, “Would you stay with me, if there was a way for me to keep my creed?”
Mayfeld sighed, “Din, we already went through this…”
Din held his hand up, “I know, I know. I just…did you mean what you said before? That you would stay if you could?”
