Nightwing manages a ‘Hello,’ but just barely. The not-cryptid sounds tired. Wheezy. Not good. Underneath the disguise, Nightwing is just a person, and people die so easily.

The Talon stands again, the knife gripped in his hand. He kicks the head down the stairwell next to them. Bruce hears it tumble down. He turns to look up at Bruce. "I will not take another Master," he declares.
Bruce raises his eyebrows. "I did not intended on making you do so," he turns to start walking away but stops just a few paces before the exit. "If you wish, you could come with me. I think there is much to discuss." he begins walking again, but does hear the sound very light footsteps following him.

He signed up for foster care and started training, and by some miracle, his first foster child had been the very same young boy from the circus. He was expecting to find something different. An exhausted Nightwing leading city repair and rescue efforts, clearly overworked. A stressed and worried older brother, concerned about his little brother’s injuries from the big bad Red Hood. Even something related to Jason being the Red Hood, whether it was pissed or confused or whatever. Not–
Not this. Not a bundled up lump of man with unwashed hair and empty eyes lying on the bed in a messy hotel room, talking about having seen Jason before (despite Jason knowing he hasn’t) and implying that Jason is going to take him to die.
OR:
Red Hood comes looking for Nightwing. Jason Todd doesn't like what he finds.
