Besides the differences in their station, it was the Priestess’ marriage to the Goddess that stood between them. The Goddess was a jealous lover, laying claim to the virginity of her myriad wives. To infringe on this sacred arrangement would surely have meant a grisly death for the Scribe, if not for the Priestess herself.
