Summary
Life feels so chaotic for Shane sometimes, with all the loud noises and the unwritten rules he’s expected to follow, even though no one ever taught them to him. It’s why the bookstore feels more like home to him than anywhere else in Boston. It doesn’t ask Shane to be anything other than himself. Doesn’t ask for any more than he can give.
He can just exist here.
Shane likes slow, likes taking his time. And Ilya - without saying or doing anything in particular - makes Shane feel like that’s okay. Like he isn’t doing anything wrong by standing still sometimes.
(Or, Shane works in a bookstore, Ilya plays hockey, and they both go to the same college. They fall in love in every universe.)

Shane thinks this is probably the first - and last - time in his life that he’s ever been excited about grocery shopping. But it’s their first time doing it together, as a couple, out in public where other people can see them. Where, finally, they don’t have to pretend to be something they’re not.
It’s such a small thing - insignificant to most people, probably - but it’s a luxury Shane never thought he would be allowed to have.

“It really fucking hurt to just be ignored for six months.”
Ilya looks at him again, nodding as he runs his finger along Shane’s bare collarbone. He shifts so that he’s lying beside Shane more than hovering on top of him, but keeps touching him and doesn’t go far.
“You can call me sensitive or whatever, but I don’t think I can do this if you’re just going to ignore me for another six months or however long after we say goodbye tonight.” Shane continues, trying to subtly wipe his wet eyes but of course Ilya notices.
“Hollander-” He reaches up to wipe the tears away, but Shane lightly pushes his hand away and shakes his head.
“I guess I’m not cut out for casual.” He whispers. “Because this has never really felt like nothing to me, and I can’t pretend that it is. You aren’t nothing to me.”
or, the boys talk in Vegas because they can't fight their feelings anymore.

Summary
Five years. It has been five years since Ilya met Shane. And now he was pretty sure he was living with the love of his life.
The first time Ilya met Shane they were in College. He was smoking a cigarette outside of the rink before his first practice with the University hockey team. Shane came to introduce himself as a good Captain. At the time, Ilya had been struck by Shane's beauty. He was smilling shyly, his skin was tan. And mostly he had a constellation of freckles on his cheeks. Ilya thought he was the cutest man he had ever seen. They shook hands twice in the span of minutes. Shane made a comment about smoking not being good for his health. And with that Ilya was a goner.
