    The room tilted slightly, and Shane’s throat was raw.

    He swayed there a moment, scanning the spinning room for somewhere to steady himself – for Haas or Dykstra. Ilya had been right; he should have slowed down, stayed with his teammates. He hadn't listened, and now he was alone, 2 Moscow Mules and 3 shots deep, stuck at the bar and lost in a sea of people.

    Shane just wanted his husband. The alcohol hadn't yet done anything to alleviate the effects of the music and lights that encircled him. He felt trapped – suffocated – like his skin was fusing itself to his stiff muscles. The room spun faster, and the Canadian wasn't convinced he was standing upright anymore. His heart pounded in his ears as the music rattled his ribcage once more, an insatiable itch beckoning his blunt fingernails.

    He wanted to scream. He wanted to rip his hair out. He wanted to tear his clothes off.

    He wanted Ilya.

    “Selfish,” he muttered under his breath, tongue heavy as it touched his teeth.

    Hayden wasn’t the type to invade someone’s privacy, but seeing Shane reduced to a ghost was wearing him down. He picked up the phone, his fingers trembling slightly as he searched for the contact “Lily.” The phone rang once, twice, three times.

    Then, the line clicked. But there was no "Hello?"

    “This is Ilya. I never check my voicemail.”

    Hayden pulled the phone away from his ear, staring at the screen as if it had just exploded. The name still read Lily. But the voice… the voice was low, gravelly, with that Russian accent he’d been hearing scream across the ice for years.

    “Rozanov?” Hayden whispered. “What the hell…”

    No, Ilya answers petulantly as he rewinds the clip. He wishes that Hollander had fought him on ice the last time they’d played. Really, if the world was going to bear witness to Hollander losing his shit on ice, wouldn't it have been more fitting for it to be at him? The details of this strange scenario flood his imagination as Ilya stews in his envy. He wonders what it would be like for Hollander to hit him. Ilya would like it, he’s sure, however painful it’d be.

    He wonders if Hollander would like it, too, and if he’d like Ilya to hit back. The answers come to him quickly, as if fed to him by the man himself.

    Yes and yes.

    Ilya goads Shane into punching him during a game. What happens next will warm your heart.
