Summary
The city beyond the gates never slept; it flickered. Neon veins pulsed through steel towers, steam hissed from brass vents, and airships drifted beneath a violet sky. Humans and sentient A.I. crossed paths without a second glance. Normal had been redefined.
But the circus was something else entirely. Not marked on any map, its gates appeared differently to each visitor. Rusted iron for some, gold for others, always open just enough to tempt, closed enough to warn.
Inside, laughter echoed beneath impossible architecture. Masked performers danced through shadows, puppets twitched on invisible strings, balloon animals shimmered like living glass. Hosts guided couples with rehearsed, inviting voices.
Everything was crafted to captivate and distract, to keep eyes where they belonged.
Beyond the velvet paths, the circus had another life. Our protagonist is not a guest or performer, but a permanent resident. Her memories slip away like smoke, questions lingering at the edge of her mind, taught to fade like whispers on the wind. Among the A.I., emotions are fragile tools, and curiosity, a weary companion.
