Valka is taken by Cloudjumper while she is still pregnant with Hiccup. She raises him away from Berk and the dragon/viking war. But she can't keep him from the conflict forever.
Hiccup grows up among dragons and peaceful villages. His childhood is a safe and pleasant one, but now that he is 15, he is ready to explore more of the Archipelago - even against his mother's wishes.
Stoick lost his wife and unborn child to the dragons, and he has been focused on revenge these past 15 years. Maybe a new alliance will finally see the dragons ended once and for all.

Astrid was 10 years old when she first noticed him. Well noticed him in a different way, they had been friends for a while, but they were never really close. She never really had any ‘close’ friends. Especially after her uncle Finn died.
She wanted, no needed to avenge him. It was the least she could do for him and she didn’t think about anything else since the day of his funeral. She didn’t have time for friends or to grieve. The only thing that she had time for was to train, to eventually kill the flightmare and avenge her uncle Finn.
So why did it bother her so much to see that stupid Bog Burglar smile like that when talking to Hiccup?

Dragons have been a problem for centuries, before vikings even settled on Berk. Stealing food, burning homes, eating livestock, taking limbs and lives. Now that peace has been found at the demise of the Red Death, some traditions fall by the wayside, while others take longer to dissolve--especially when family pride and social gain are at stake. Astrid finds herself torn between what she truly wants and her sense of duty. Hiccup does not make things any easier for her either. But maybe--just maybe--he can find a solution to their woes.
I orphaned an older, unedited version of this fic long ago when I thought I was done with HTTYD altogether. I am resurrecting and reclaiming it now.
