Ryland watched as the fire truck passed by his window, the siren briefly drawing out the annoying alarm that was still going off. He observed as people— actual humans walked across the street. Talking. Laughing. The doors to the diner across the street chimed as people left with their orders, the engines of the cars roared, the lights switched from green to yellow and finally red. Up in the sky, he saw storm clouds and smoke that puffed up from the chimneys.
“It’s going to rain…” he whispered to himself, the words coming out far too easily for what the situation demanded. Because against all odds, logic and science.
Dr. Ryland Grace was back on Earth.

After living a couple of years on Erid, Simon eventually passes away from his mutations. Leaving behind his husband to pick up the broken pieces.Then a week after Simon's death, Ryland wakes up in his bed alone. But something's not quite right as the room he finds himself in, should no longer belong to him.

Summary
Disaster strikes the Hail Mary on its way back to Earth. The taumoeba escape their breeding tanks, and make it to the fuel lines. Stranded in space just outside the Tau Ceti system, Dr Ryland Grace can't do anything. He can't go save Rocky, he can't go save Earth. Exhausted, out of options, and distraught, he fills the ship with nitrogen, and takes his final breath.
Next thing he knows, his eyes flutter open in his San Francisco apartment. It's a year before ArcLight touches down on Earth, but he remembers the Petrova Task Force.

Summary
This was supposed to be an expedition to just another moon to study a new taumoeba mutation but everything goes wrong when shortly after arrival two crewmembers are found brutally murdered. Even thou he is terrified Grace tries to help find the murderer, mostly in an atempt to keep himself from going insane. Beeing locked in a metal box in space with something murderous will do that to you.
Luckily the grumpy O2 tech Simon finally seems to warm up to the crew of the Hail Mary 2 and turns out to be a sweet guy. But time is ticking for Simon, who is terrified of loosing himself fully

But that is mostly not relevant
