Jon stared out of Elias' window to the rose bush he had favored hiding behind. It had been pruned aggressively and tied into a more pleasing shape with twine.
The first bits of green where starting to show, waiting to bloom into something vibrant and bristling. He was certain the first blooms would be gorgeous. Worthy of this home and the man who cared for them so meticulously.

"I-I…" Jon curled in on himself, clutching the delivered statement closer to his chest. "I'm so s-"
Georgie closed her laptop with a snap, cutting Jon off. He eyed her, readying himself for her to ask him to leave. She had that determined set in her shoulders now, eyeing him critically, before she scooted over to his side of the couch - this one was a fair bit larger than what they had shared before.

Basira didn't quite know if she should feel thankful for the fact that the Institute was covering the cost of Daisy's physical therapy. Daisy was no longer a part of the force, and with what Daisy had gone through, and what she had been capable of before, private really was the only option - minimizing risk to as small as pool as possible.
Bouchard, even from a prison cell, still pulled all the strings it seemed.

Summary
The home of Jonah Magnus was less grand than Moorland -just as old - and more gaudy, but still, less.
It was not the Eye's seat of power, but still served Jonah well, passing it down from institute head to institute head so he'd never have to leave. The walls were steeped almost as much in the Lonely as the Eye. It put Peter at ease, when it should not have, blunting the ever present prickle of sight into a more familiar cold numbness.

Summary
There seemed to be no reasonable explanation for this phenomenon and Jon did not deal well with things without reasonable explanations. They stirred far too much within him, that he would prefer remained good and dormant, thank you.
So, he would just have to dig down until he found a damn reasonable explanation and dragged it out roughly, by the ears.
Jon never had been very good at computers, after all. Maybe that was the issue?
Maybe, all he had to do for all this to make sense, was to learn.

Summary
“No, Tim, I’ve never felt the urge to jump out of a plane,” Jon turned back to his notes - neatly handwritten and detailed - on the next few chapters, while, almost offhandedly, adding, “I was pushed out of one, once, but fortunately it wasn’t very high up at the time.
“So, I’ve been thinking about the magic system in this world…”
Sasha was the one who got in first, this time, after their shared miniature WTF? moment.
“Forget the magic system, Jon, what the hell do you mean you were pushed out of a plane?”
“What, like, on purpose?” Martin stared at him, with what, in retrospect, was an extremely rude intensity, while Jon’s shoulders stiffened with clear regret at speaking without thinking; then settled slowly into ‘resigned’.
“It was a … rather strange time in my life. Now, the biggest flaw with the magic system …”

Summary
“Ah, Martin? Do I … do I seem a little weird to you?”
Martin was halfway through a valiant denial, when he paused and reconsidered.
“Well. Actually, there is something a little, I don’t know … strangely summer-like, about you, at the moment? An impression of warmth and ripening fruit.”
Jon had been expecting anything from ‘yes, obviously’ to ‘more scary than weird’ to ‘you’re an eldritch abomination, Jon, what do you think?’; so this rather poetical terminology threw him entirely.
Which is possibly why he broke out in butterflies.

Summary
Most archaeologists, in Jon’s experience, would find themselves, sooner or later - and usually sooner - being walloped around the head by Indiana Jones references. Their mug collection would be slowly infested by smirking Harrison Fords. They would find themselves the weary owner of at least two ill-fitting costumes, complete with fake plastic bullwhip. And they would field a thousand tired variants on ‘Why did it have to be snakes?’
He, it seemed, was the sole exception. No one, on meeting Jonathan Sims, could ever remotely confuse him with Indiana Jones. When he mentioned his profession, the image that leapt immediately to mind, was, not a fedora and several films’ worth of thrillingly perilous adventures, but a man who did dull, meticulous research and spent hours getting moderately excited over pottery shards.
Jon really, really wished that this was the truth.
