“Bucky—“ Joaquin starts. “Er— I mean… Sargent Barnes? Senator? Whatever, just listen. He isn’t conscious yet, and—“
“I just want to check on him,” Bucky says, “He doesn’t have to be awake for me to see if he’s okay.”
“Well— yeah,” Joaquin says. “But listen, he’s— he’s different.”
And this, finally, has Bucky stop in his tracks, in the middle of a sterile corridor with painfully bright fluorescents humming overhead.
“Different?” Bucky repeats. “Different how?”
“They did things to him,” Joaquin says. He’ll hardly meet his eyes. “He- He was awake, sort of, when we found him. And he wasn’t— I mean, he wasn’t not Sam, but he was… wrong. In shock, maybe, but they did things to him, experiments, and—“
And maybe Joaquin thought this would make Bucky hesitate. Maybe he thought Bucky would listen more once he heard the gravity of the situation.
Instead, Bucky sets off in a run.

Summary
There was a feather on Bucky’s pillow when he woke up.
It was beautiful, dappled with brown speckles that faded to near-white at the tip. He spent a long moment just looking at it, running his fingers across the soft, delicate little barbs. Sam was usually meticulous about this sort of thing—his wings always impeccably groomed, always carefully contained and folded away, as if they weren’t the most extraordinary thing about him.
As beautiful as it was, the feather wasn’t a good sign.

Things are finally sort of going Sam's way. He's got his team together. The public is slowly warming up to the idea of the Avengers being back, and him being the right Captain America to lead it. His personal life is nonexistent and he's fucking tired but hey all that hard work has paid off and it feels good! Worth it!
It would be perfect if it weren't for Bucky and his edgy team currently doing tricks for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and having their New Avengers image slapped onto every box of Wheaties. Every phone call with the man he called his friend and partner has just led to a frustrating game of accusations, confusion, and endless circular arguments. Sam doesn't get it or understand why it feels like Bucky is hiding something from him. And it hurts more than he expects.
However, when a mission goes wrong, it puts him and Joaquin directly in the crosshairs of the Serpents. And the only place they can hide is with the very group of people they're supposed to be feuding with.

Sam snorted.
“Really? An adrenaline junkie?” asked Sam, rolling his eyes.
“I don’t think that’s so bad. I’m an adrenaline junkie myself. Part of why I climb so well is that I kept trying to reach higher places no matter how deadly it was,” said Riley, a hint of mischief in his tone, “There’s something about the rush, the need for it, the feeling of that high. It’s addicting. I get it.”
Sam’s annoyance softened.
“Yeah,” said Sam, “I get that too.”
“But he’s also hot,” Riley said as he watched Sam laugh, “I’ve heard of him being hot. I probably won’t see him any time soon, but – I don’t know, it would be nice to meet him. Maybe talk. Maybe make a deal with him if he doesn’t choose me.”

Bucky leaned on an aqueduct, half-hidden by the shadows. There was something about meeting him here. Every time. A jolt of excitement from their clandestine arrangement despite it being nothing more than an exchange of information. Sam and Bucky trying to broker peace between the A-Force of Arcadia and the Thor Corps of Doomsgard. There had always been shaky ground. It made sense to try to work together to stop any fights from breaking out between them.

“A summons,” murmured Redwing, “Strange that someone might hail for you.”
“Don’t say it like that. I’m very popular,” said Sam, standing up from his gold leaf throne as fall itself wandered with him down the steps of his throne room, towards the mirrored water on the edge of it, “A lot of people would love to know me.”
“True. But how many can actually summon you?” countered Redwing, flying off the throne and onto Sam’s shoulder, “Who would be reckless enough to summon a Seelie King?”
His wings twitched. He didn’t have the sense. Not like many others of his kind. He had no idea what lay ahead in the future. But he sometimes had feelings. An instinct that called to him, told him to go. Something in Sam was clawing at him; it was screaming out to him that this was important. That it was going to be important.
“Someone willing to take risks,” said Sam as he grinned at the thought, excitement bubbling under the surface of his skin.
