Kaveh wasn't rich. He didn't come from money. He wasn't turning to money anytime soon. He was turning less and less motivated. His skin was always covered in goosebumps, the cobwebs more present in his cabinets than any real food. Tighnari and Cyno were getting worried about him and he knew it.
So, they gathered up a bit of Mora and bought him an early birthday present. Just to serve as a companion for a while. An android- a cheaper one. Marked down for errors. Perfect for Kaveh, who insisted he never wanted something perfect around.
What could go wrong?

He is a burning candle, a crumbling building, a cattle with perfected lines drawn into his body. He is a perfectionist, a people pleaser, a person unable to let the world see him as anything less than what he has shown. Kaveh steps into the world as perfect and prim, just like the architect that everyone thinks that he is.

“I can feel you there,” Alhaitham says with his eyes closed. They’re in a recreation of the Avidya Rainforest tonight, and Alhaitham’s resting in the branches of a tree until Kaveh materializes in front of him with a distinctly guilty look on his face.

Kaveh likes to think he has a relatively good memory.
He still remembers the first time his mother had taken him to the Akademiya, sometime before he’d been enrolled, still remembers basking in the grandeur of the impressive architecture with her hand carding gently through his hair.
He still remembers the very first time he’d lost someone close to him, still remembers the hollow feeling of his stomach dropping to his feet when he’d learned about his father’s death.
He still remembers the very last time he’d lost someone close to him, still remembers the burning heat behind his eyes and the tightness in his throat as he’d strayed from his morals. He still remembers Alhaitham, unfazed and stoic as ever as Kaveh had retaliated, wanting to hurt Alhaitham the way he’d been hurt.
He remembers the happier times of his life, too! He’s not just a sad sap.
In an unfortunate, untimely turn of events, Kaveh shatters. Alhaitham is there to pick up the pieces.

Alhaitham’s morning routine adds a kiss before he leaves for work. On the days Kaveh’s brain runs at two-times speed and everything is too much, he leans against Alhaitham’s shoulder and hides under his jacket, their fingers laced together. On the nights Alhaitham comes home with a kink in his back and a sore mind, Kaveh’s there to commiserate and help.
And yet, Kaveh cannot say it back.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Kaveh says back. He raises an arm to push him out of the way, so that he can gather up his supplies from the desk, but Alhaitham’s reflexes are too quick.
He catches Kaveh’s hand with his own, snatching it out of the air like a crystalfly. Eagle eyes zero in on the way it elicits a flinch out of him.
A beat passes, and Kaveh foolishly hopes that Alhaitham will ignore it, but of course, fate would never allow him to be so lucky.
