But Will was looking up at him with that soft, patient, exhausted expression, the one that always undid Mike completely, and Mike found himself leaning down before he'd properly decided to, pressing a quick, clumsy kiss to Will's forehead, right at his hairline, the way his own mom did to him sometimes when he was sick, except it didn't feel like that at all, it felt like something else entirely, something warmer and more complicated that Mike didn't have any real words for yet at twelve and didn't feel any particular need to find words for either. It was just a thing he did now. Just a thing that felt right.

Through unspoken agreement, neither Steve, Jonathan, or Nancy talked about it. They didn’t hang out together but as separate units, although they all knew that the others knew, from Will telling Mike or vice versa. In Steve’s case, he never brought it up because he didn’t know how to talk about it. He’d never meant to run into Jonathan the first time, and he definitely hadn’t intended to have dinner with the Byers the second time, and the third—well, Hopper was entirely to blame for that.
He ended up at the Byers a few more times over the summer. Only ever when he was out running and started to recognize the area, and he’d hear Joyce’s voice in his head saying you know where we are, and then Hopper’s gruff you have people now; and his feet had started leading him before his mind had even made up.

Mike thought his world ended when his best friend Will Byers went missing in November. Now Mike's being sent to Derry for the summer to be with his identical twin Richie, but Mike soon realises that Derry isn't all it seems. Children are going missing and he fears The Upside Down has followed him to Derry, but soon Mike and The Losers Club discover the monster lurking in the sewers is worse than anything that could come out of the Upside Down and this time Mike might not survive.

Gdy Jonathan wyszedł rano na ganek w samym tiszercie, ziemia była zimna, ale nie zlodowaciała, a główki kwiatów unosiły się powoli do jasnobłękitnego nieba, powoli jak odgnieciona serwetka, z której Will przy śniadaniu złożył łabędzia."
Pod koniec marca Benny Hammond zastrzelił się w pracy. Kilka tygodni wcześniej Will – w równie niejasnych okolicznościach – zaginął i został cudownie odnaleziony.
Teraz jest zima i Knajpie Benny'ego grozi zamknięcie; Jonathan stoi za ladą i wspomina wydarzenia ostatnich ośmiu miesięcy, podczas gdy przez knajpę przewijają się znajome twarze.
