Unfortunately for Dean, The Empty is not taking no for an answer and is trying to reclaim Castiel right as he is coming to terms with his feelings for the angel.

The world has been back for a week. Except Cas, of course. When Jack had waved a hand and reset creation (that’s still something Dean has a hard time wrapping his head around, that this kid, his kid, is powerful enough to breathe life into an empty universe like it’s nothing), Dean had asked, tentatively, trying to will his voice not to shake when he said his name. “Hey, uh, Jack—Cas, he—could you—?”
And Jack had shaken his head, smiling in a way that made Dean feel naked and exposed and guilty. “I’m sorry. I can’t…reach him. And I won’t make the same mistakes the last God did.”
Sam had nodded, like it made perfect sense.
So, there it is. The whole world is back to normal and everything is sunny again. And Dean couldn't give less of a fuck.

Happiness is something Dean thought he could never have. Happiness is something Cas knew he could only have for one single moment.
It’s hope and not happiness Dean is after, when he asks Jack to bring Cas back. Hope for a future with Cas, because he can’t see any future for himself without Cas. Happiness is not something he dares to hope for, just like love is not something he dares to hope for. But he can hope for Cas and maybe that’s actually the same as hoping for happiness and hoping for love.
Cas doesn’t know what to hope for, what to wish for, what to want. One moment of true happiness already felt impossible until it happened. Is there more true happiness for him with Dean? Can he hope, wish, want that? Will they be able to find happiness with each other? -

"Quickly feeling jealous of a moment he didn’t get to share with Cas, one that they have established as theirs in their routine of getting ready for bed (brushing their teeth together) and waking up together (coffee, trimming their beards, putting balm on it). Dean is jealous of the distance that exists between Cas and him. Of the little meter Cas has respectfully put in between them. He wants to cross it just to taste all of it again. The matching Kid’s shampoo on Castiel’s hair. The coconut lotion he lathers on his skin. For some reason he prefers the products that are softer on his skin. Getting used to being human, he imagines. It works, Cas is so soft. Dean could melt against him.
Cas smashes the cigarette against the soil. Once it’s not burning, he puts it in his pocket. He’s that kind of guy. To burn off his own lungs without letting the rest of the world burn. He’s in love with humanity."
Dean begs Jack to bring him Castiel back. He doesn't answer. After months of alcoholised laments, the brothers find a spell. Cas is back. Well, he sleeps for a long time. Six months. But he's back. The last thing he said to Dean was "I love you." What are they supposed to do, now?

He's looking forward to a fun, nostalgic summer, but what he didn't expect is the return of his childhood friend Cas. Or better known as: The guy who suddenly left camp when they were 15 without a word and ghosted Dean since then. Now Dean has to figure out how to deal with the backlash of whatever drove him and Cas apart and also how to keep the kids from trying to constantly get in trouble.
