Chapter 1: PROLOGUE

Chapter Text

The road beneath the two doored Chevrolet Impala was bumpy and full of pot holes but neither male inside seemed to mind, used to the rough pathway that was the two lane road they often traveled. Dean Winchester, keeping one hand on the wheel, reached over into the passenger side glovebox and pulled out a beef jerky stick. He opened the road trip snack with his teeth and took a bite.
“So what even is in Sunnydale, California?” He asked as they passed a mile marker. Sam cleared his throat, sitting up a little straighter on the leather bench seat.
“Not much apparently.” He responds, scrolling through a news article on his phone. “I mean, it’s a pretty small town. A community college, a few shops, a mall…I mean aside from the article we found, it seems pretty normal. From the outside anyway.” He finished with a sigh.
“Meaning?” Dean asked, casting a side glance at his brother as he took another bite of his snack, resting his wrist of the hand he held the beef jerky in on the steering wheel.
“Meaning,” Sam continued, clearing his throat as he locks his phone. “There’s murders going back years that never seemed to be solved because they just kind of stopped.”
“And a bunch of cold cases is our thing because…?” Dean questioned, green eyes on the dark road.
“Well, one thing is that a vast majority of them took place in the local high school.” Sam points out. “A few students reported a few years ago that they saw a group of students, get this, maul the principal and the school mascot.” He shrugged and turned back on his phone.
“Like…human mascot or-” Dean started.
“Pig. An actual pig.” Sam interrupted, shaking his head. “But we’re here because of this.” He begins to read an article to his brother. “Local found with throat mutilated in The Bronze back alley.”
“The hell is a Bronze?” Dean asked, brow scrunched.
“Really? That’s what interests you the most?” Sam deadpanned before rolling his eyes. “I don’t know, some club teenagers and college kids hang out at.” Dean slowly nodded as Sam continued. “Anyway, it’s worth checking out, the report said the body looked like something took a chunk out of the neck.” He said.
“Uh huh.” Dean said, before throwing a glance at his brother. “And you’re sure this isn’t just you missing good ol’ Cali?” He gave his younger brother a playful smirk. Sam scoffed in response, casting his own gaze out the window. “Oh, or is this because Eileen’s in LA working on a ghoul case?” Sam shot him a glare that Dean interpreted as “shut the hell up”. The older of the two laughed and turned on the radio, Enter Sandman playing at a volume that would surely damage their ears over time.

The Bronze was a building in downtown Sunnydale, the sign glowing above the door dimly in the daylight. It was nearly empty, a few cop cars posted out front. Inside, a stage and many tables were spread throughout the room. There was a catwalk that overlooked the lower floor and the lights, which the two boys assumed were probably usually bright LED stagelights, were set to a dimmer setting and the light of day lit up the room through the windows.
Sam headed for the back exit, wanting to check for anything that could possibly help, even though it most likely was a vamp, based on the injury the victim experienced. Dean went to talk to the chief of police, hand in his pocket to pull out the FBI badge he had buried within. Clearing his throat he approached the male and flashed the badge and a smile.
“Agent Carlson from the FBI.” He says, flipping the badge closed and putting it in his pocket once more. “My partner, Agent Hill, is out back checking the crime scene.”
“They got the FBI on this case?” The chief scoffed. “Sorry you’re here for nothing, Agent.” He shrugged, hands in his pockets.
“Nothing?” Dean furrowed his brow and urged the chief to continue.
“Yeah. I mean…” He shrugged again and Dean was beginning to assume he had an issue with his shoulders. “I don’t know what to tell you, agent. Wild animal attack.”
“Really? Downtown…wild animal attack?” Dean narrowed his eyes, skeptical. I swear if he shrugs again… Dean thought as the chief began to lift his shoulders. A hand came down on his shoulder, stopping the lift. The chief turned and Dean stepped to the side slightly to focus his attention on the girl who had appeared behind the chief. Blonde, green eyes, fair skin. Wearing a white halter top with a pair of boot cut jeans.
“Have you talked to the kids who were there with her?” The girl says. “‘Cause I hear they’ve got some pretty interesting things to say if-”
“If the police wanted to hear from a bunch of hungover college kids about an animal attack, that’s where they’d be, kid.” The chief sighs. His phone rings and he excuses himself, heading off to the side somewhere to answer the phone. The girl continues to scowl at the back of the man as he walks away.
“Careful, glare any harder and you’ll burn a hole in his back.” Dean smirks, stepping to stand beside her. The girl rolls her eyes.
“Why is the FBI here?” She asked, turning to face him. Dean cleared his throat.
“Ahem well uh…” Dean tried to think of an excuse but GOD she was hot.
“Hey.” Sam says, hand on his brother's shoulder to gain his attention. The younger male gives a polite smile to the girl for interrupting the conversation and Dean swiftly turns and heads for the exit, Sam trailing behind him.
“Find anything?” Dean asks as they exit the building. Sam shakes his head.
“Zilch.” He sighs and slides into the passenger seat of Baby, Dean getting in on the driver's side.
“So where to then?” Dean asks as he turns the key, the engines purr following the motion soon after.
“Best guess? Cemetery.” Sam shrugs. Dean nods and turns on the radio once more.

— — — — — — —

“Dean!” Sam yelled in the dark cemetery, tossing a machete his brother's way. Despite the rain blurring his vision, Dean caught it by the handle and swung at the whatever-the-hell that was attacking him. The thing dodged and went to grab Dean but narrowly missed as Sam came rushing towards them with his own machete in hand. The creature ducked and moved its attention to Sam, chasing him through the gravestones.
“What the fuck is this thing?” Dean shouted to his brother, moving to his duffle to try and find his gun. Grabbing the silver weapon by its white grip once he spotted it, he moved to aim at the creature chasing his little brother.
“I don’t know!” Sam shouted back. “I thought it was a vamp!” He says as he turns and dodges as the thing lunges at him. Unluckily, he misstepped, foot slipping on a gravestone slick with rain. His head hit the root of a tree, thoroughly knocking him out for the time being.
“Again?” Dean said exasperatedly as he fired his gun at the creature that tried to lunge once more at his brother. Yes, it saved his brother. But now the creature's gaze was locked on Dean like he was a target. The thing came running at him once more and Dean stumbled back, rain making mud beneath him and he slipped, his back hitting a tree and his gun tumbling from his hand. It wasn’t long before the creature stood in front of him, glaring down at him with hunger.

The creature wasn’t anything like a vampire he’d seen before. Usually vamps had a normal face but a mouth full of teeth. This thing had a pronounced furrowed brow ridge, pale skin, and two sharp fangs. Whatever this thing was, it was not a vampire. Not one he or his brother were used to anyway.

Dean's eyes glanced towards his brother. Still knocked out cold. Great. This is…
“Awesome.” Dean had muttered, resting his head back against the tree bark. His thoughts overwhelmed him. Hey, he thought, at least I didn’t die from something I’ve already fought. Fuck that’s a depressing thought process. And I didn’t even get to finish rewatching Scooby Doo.

Originally, he tried to focus on the vampire, but the flash of blonde hair flickering through the rain caught his attention. He tilted his head to the side, likeness to a confused puppy. He watched as a figure did a front flip over a headstone. Before he could blink, the thing was gone. And replacing the spot was a female, the female he saw in the Bronze earlier that day actually, her long blonde hair damp from the rain, green eyes lined with mascara, and in her hands was what looked to be a…

Is that a wooden stake?

What the-

“Fuck…” Sam groaned as he stumbled his way over to his brother who was stunned on the ground. “What happened?” He huffed, fingers touching the wound on his head caused by the bark of the root he had fallen onto. His eyes fell on the female. “Uh...Who are you?”
