In the dim light of the dying fire, Paddy reaches over and rests his hand on Eoin's chest. “My ma, the poor woman, called me Blair. That's my name. Robert Blair Mayne.”
“Robert Blair Mayne”, Eoin repeats, the words melting in his mouth like Eucharist. He will never write this, he thinks, even when there is no risk in it. He could never give this to someone else. He turns and touches Paddy's cheek with a shaky hand, the scruffy beard needles into his palm. “So you are.”
In which everything that could have gone wrong at the beginning of the war has gone wrong, and a war reporter named Eoin meets Paddy, trying to fight off the invasion of Britain from France.

Almonds gives Kershaw a proper bollocking on the way back to their camp. Anthony leads the way and has a very pleasant time listening to the two of them behind him, especially the moment where Almonds slips in praise for Anthony himself for his resilience. If Anthony deliberately stands up straighter and sways his hips a bit, that’s between him and God.

Johnny Cooper is a roguish, impulsive, queer man and the youngest of the original L Detachment of the SAS. He's a terrifyingly competent and sometimes brutal soldier. But in October of 1943 his number comes up. In saving his best friend, Reg Seekings from a shelled truck in Termoli, Italy, Johnny is hit in the back by a sniper. His injuries at Termoli are life changing. He's paralyzed, and convinced he won't survive. Instead he is at the center of a medical and social revolution. Before now paralyzed men were left to die, but under the care of Dr. Ludwig Guttmann he stands a fighting chance. During the First World War almost no one with Johnny's injuries survived. However, with improved field medicine and the advent of penicillin by the end of the Second World War there are hundreds of men with spinal injuries who can live long and happy lives and must fight for their place in a world that doesn't accommodate them. Johnny's story follows the early days of the disability rights movement and the advent of the Paralympic Games. And yes dear reader, Johnny Cooper will be armed once more, just not quite in the way you might expect.
