Etho sighed. As much as he didn’t want to, as much as he dreaded going back to their big empty house alone, as much as he hated the idea of growing old without Bdubs, Etho knew he was right. He nodded, tears pricking at his eyes. -

Oh gods, had the king gotten a hold of some of Pearl’s letters? If that happened, there was no way Etho would be able to-
To do what? What was Etho even saying? To do…another scam? The biggest scam they could ever do. A robbery of the royal vault, filled to the brim with gold, more than any of them could spend in one lifetime.
It was like the three of them got to the same place at the same time, all three of them looking up at each other with varying degrees of excitement. “We can’t.” Tango instantly said, a smile already starting to grow on his face.
“It would be a death wish.” Etho agreed.
“I mean,” Pearl paused, eyes flicking down towards the letter again. “Ignoring a summons like that, that would be a death wish as well.” There was another pause, Pearl letting the sentiment really sink in. Then-
“It would be the greatest scam we could ever do.”

Etho was not having a panic attack.
Sure, he was currently curled up on a makeshift bed, knees tucked into his chest, unable to catch his breath, but he was fine. Really.
It was just that death seemed to hit harder for him than it did anyone else. While most other players of these games could just respawn on their feet and continue about their day, Etho couldn't. Whether the death was murder or an accident, he couldn't switch his brain off fight or flight mode, no matter how hard he tried.

The feeling is small but distinct, a quiet click somewhere in his chest, like a puzzle piece snapping into place without him ever seeing the picture on the box. Contentment, maybe. Or something adjacent to it. It’s confusing more than anything else, the way his body seems satisfied even though there’s no obvious reason for it to be.
He huffs softly, the sound more air than frustration, but there’s annoyance there all the same. He doesn’t like not understanding himself. He doesn’t like when his thoughts slip out of neat, logical lines and start doing… this. The sensation in his hands doesn’t feel particularly good in any concrete way. It isn’t pleasure. It isn’t relief. But it isn’t uncomfortable either, and that might be what’s bothering him the most.

He’s had a long day at work, and nearly got a lot of sleep the night before, so he’s just assuming he's just tired.
He gets home and his husband runs out of the living room, a big smile on his face, “Etho!”
Etho hates to admit it, but even Bdubs’ voice is too loud, making his ears hurt.
He goes to voice that something is wrong, but nothing comes out.
He bites his lip, he just wants to lay down.
