Edward Elric wasn't expecting much when Colonel "bastard" Mustang ordered him to come to his office. He assumed it would be a simple mission, like looking at a coal mine or beating some people's asses. He wasn't expecting this.
“You are to attend a school called UA.”
Now, set on a mission he does NOT want to do, he has to spend his time undercover at a high school for those with supernatural abilities, keeping an eye on this green-haired boy with a funny name. He's never wanted to quit being a State Alchemist more.

"It felt like an eternity had passed before something like recognition sparked in Fullmetal's eyes, and it was only a moment later that he was taking a step toward Roy instead. One shaky step was all it took before Roy felt a small head suddenly face-plant into his chest.
He blinked down at the boy, afraid to move even his still outstretched arm as Fullmetal took in a large, shuddering breath and let it out slowly. As if that was all he needed, the golden head retreated. Then, without even a passing glance at Roy, Fullmetal silently started shuffling toward the exit of the station."

When the Fullmetal Alchemist is sent on a mission to Western Command to infiltrate a group of teenagers who are sending people across the Amestrian boarder for illegal purposes, he comes back two weeks later with rather severe trauma. The mission was successful, but at what cost? Mustang, as well as his team and Alphonse, try to bring back the once fiery teenager as the military works to get the Fullmetal Alchemist back onto the field, no matter what they have to do.
(This is mostly a trauma-recovery fic with a few twists and turns along the way. I'm not very good at summaries, but I hope you give it a try!)

Jane Shepard the notorious Butcher of Torfan, raised in the slums of Earth to only lose her entire family before she was mistreated for being a biotic by the BAaT program then by the general human public for their hatred of biotics to then becoming the most despised war criminal in Alliance Military history by massacring millions of innocent slaves unfortunately is determined to make Edward's life alot more complicated.
Edward has to deal with someone who has no issue crossing any moral boundaries in order to complete the mission.

Ed stretched, his one flesh arm knocking gently against Al’s head. Al had never really noticed how much his big brother searched for little touches when he himself couldn’t feel. But now he could and he realized he’d forgotten how much he also liked little physical contacts.
"I’mma take a nap," said his brother. "Good night, Al."
Al smiled, and he had forgotten how the muscles felt tightening around his cheeks, but maybe, just maybe, with his brother at his side, he could remember.

Summary
Not every Xerxian died in Father's circle.
Most of them did. The vast majority was gone. However, it's not so simple to wipe out an entire population.
The living Xerxians fled to Ishval, where the two cultures melted into each other over 400 years. There's no longer any functional distinction between them. Van Hohenheim still starts a family with Trisha Elric, and his eldest son still looks almost exactly like him (for better or for worse).
Edward Elric has to navigate a country of people who hate him as he tries to fix Al's body. He's smart enough to not attempt human transmutation again, but if you have the soul and the corpse, there has to be a solution, right?
He's going to get his brother all the way back. Even if he has to work for the same military that tried to kill him.

In Truth's domain, Edward is ready to make a deal with the being to give his brother back, but Truth is already ahead of him, letting him know that he can get Alphonse back if he does a favor for the god. Uneasy, Ed demands more information and Truth gives it to him plain and simple:
Three hidden Philosopher Stones had slipped through the cracks of reality when Father tried to merge with the higher being. Because of restrictions, Truth tasks Ed with retrieving the three stones in order to pay for his brother's toll and in order to get back to Amestris. Ed agrees, gets to add in a few of his own conditions to the deal, and is transported over in order to get it over with.
