Summary
Chip could feel his whole chest pounding rhythmically, and after the time he’d spent with his body still and silent, it felt wrong. Nausea churned in his stomach as the intense awareness of his body grew. What was he now? Human? Dead?
He shouldn’t be alive, that was for sure.
As his heart continued beating, his chest burned hotter and hotter until he finally felt bile rise up in his throat, and he retched, coughing up something acidic. His throat burned, and he coughed a few more times, turning back to Arlin.
Arlin. Right, he couldn’t let himself forget. Arlin was…important to him. He was pretty sure that was true.
What was he saying, of course Arlin was important to him, he was the closest thing Chip had to a father. A dad.

what if Arlin died when Gillion attacked the egg, and also what if Chip's memory problems got worse? -

Summary
Gillion's eyes begin to flutter closed, his breaths shorter and shallower and slower until they– they just stop. Nothing moves beneath Chip's trembling hands, no one stirs awake at the ragged tear of Chip's voice, and it's all his fault.
And all around him, smoke-sodden laughter shakes the walls, the floor, ringing again and again and again–
And then Chip gasps awake, the cry of Gillion's name still on his lips, hands still shaking, shaking, someone shaking him.
"It's alright, I'm here to– to. To vanquish."
It's Gillion. Gillion's dead on the floor, hooked through the chest and stained bloody. Gillion's right here, in front of him, eyes wide and concerned. Water drips down his chin, landing on Chip's cheek.
OR: Chip startles awake from a nightmare. Gillion helps.

Summary
Chip lights a cigarette, leaning against the railing of the ship. It's late, the full moon creeping closer to being directly overhead. He should be belowdecks, asleep. Or trying to go to sleep.
He takes a drag, exhaling the smoke and watching as it curls up into the sky. The stars twinkle far overhead, his eyes tracing the lines of constellations Arlin and Drey had showed him when he was young. The Big and Little Dippers, the Wolf and the Lion, the Great Bow…he barely remembers any of the stories behind them now, but he's never forgotten the shapes of those ones.
"Chip? Why are you still up?"
He turns to meet Jay's eyes, the golden one glowing softly in the dark. Her hair falls in a riot of curls, freed from the tight braid she'd had it in while tinkering.

Summary
The Hole in the Sea is cold. Or maybe it isn’t- Chip can’t feel much these days, anyway. Here, in the dark, in the thick blanket of silence, something sinks deep into the very core of Chip’s being. Something here weighs on Gillion and Gryffon in a way that Chip can see, clings to them in a way it doesn’t to him.
The Hole in the Sea is cold, and it welcomes Chip home.
Despite his desperation, Chip can't seem to get this damn compass working, and Gillion is erring ever closer to breaking his oath outright to prove how much he cares. Gryffon stays by their side, and they keep moving in search of Drey, Arlin, and- hopefully, eventually- a way out.

Summary
It’s almost poetic, how they hear footsteps thundering down the hall as Chip speaks his name. Something akin to a sob tears itself from Chip’s throat at the familiar sound.
Caution thrown to the wind, he’s ripping the door open with such force before he can even be sure that it’s Gillion. He knows it is– nothing else in this wretched place had footsteps, in the literal sense. Just haunting growls and groans that bounced off of every cold, gray wall. Nothing except for their friend, throwing himself through the door as if right on time. Chip could cry. He’s sure the same could be said for Jay. Gillion’s eyes are wide when he meets theirs, and he looks almost scared— that means he’s alive, alive, alive– that Chip is, basically, already getting over the joy of not having lost his friend. They still aren’t out of this mess, even if things are looking much better.
None of their lives are saved, not yet.

Chip and Jay are a little too trusting, and it spirals into the demise of the Riptide Pirates.

It was then she noticed something move next to her- Gillion, presumably. Jay sucked in a deep breath, taking a moment to prepare herself to probably fight a shark and swinging her chair to the side.
She was not, in fact, faced with a shark wielding Gillion. Instead, she found herself looking at a man in maybe his mid thirties, with greasy brown curls and dark blue eyes. A complete stranger.

"Great," Chip deadpans. "I'm so excited for you to dump me out of my hammock again."
"If you had a bed, this wouldn't happen to you."
"Leave my hammock alone! Just because you can't handle what the usual sleeping conditions on a pirate ship are doesn't mean you need to take it out on me."
"I'll throw you over board."
"Try me." Despite his words, he's not expecting Jay to really shove him backwards into the freezing cold water. "JAY!"
"You told me to try!" She shouts down, laughing.
"I didn't mean it!! Giiiillll help me," he shouts back, giving pleading eyes to their other captain.
Gill looks at Jay for confirmation. She's laughing so hard she has to hold on to the side.
"Push her in!" Chip shouts.
"Okay!" Gill's tail wags as he throws her into the water. Jay shrieks, landing with a loud splash.

If there was one thing that Chip was certain of about Jay, it was that she was a crier. Jay cried at everything. She cried when she was sad, when she was happy, when she was angry. She’d burst into tears in the middle of a crowded street if a stall runner said something even mildly sad. But he’d never seen Jay as truly and utterly devastated as she looked right now. Disheveled might’ve been a better word.

Summary
Gillion Tidestrider, Champion of the Undersea, is used to unsteady waters. He has stayed strong in uncertain waters, when the current threatens to drag him to the very depths.
On land, Gillion is…not used to how unsteady he feels. And not just when he’s walking, on earth that doesn’t move beneath his feet, that doesn’t anticipate his every move.
Gill stumbles as he crosses from the Albatross onto dry ground, and her arm shoots out to steady him. “Thank you, Jay.”
“Course,” she says, squeezing his forearm gently. “Now! We need some more rice…” her sharp eyes scan the market stall signs as they come into view, and her hand slips from his arm to hold onto his hand, carefully minding the webbing between them. She squeezes his hand and he squeezes back.

Gillion let out a gasp at the scenery, still squeezing Chip’s hand, and Chip felt his heart jump in his chest. It was one thing to think about coming out to someone, one thing to talk about it, and a whole entirely different thing to be actually doing it, walking towards the Divine Barchemist with no real plan in his head except to totally wing it.
Chip is trans, and Jay convinces him to come out to Gillion. Apparently, because of the Undersea, Gillion doesn't even really understand the concept of gender, and the whole thing goes a whole lot better than he thought. Did you know Gillion could lay eggs?

Looking in the mirror, a voice sounding like Gillion in his head told him to look at the bright side, that at least he was still here. He might not be alive, but he was still Chip. Each piece of him held memories, even the parts he’d lost. He’d always think of the hidden library and the joy on the faces on the Midnight Rose’s crew when he looked at where his lips should be, he’d think of training with Igneous when he looked at his sword-wielding skeletal hands, and looking at his ribs, he’d think of Jay’s smile.
He wanted that to be more than enough, he really did.
But it was so hard, not to be overwhelmed by it all. He took a breath, pulling the bandana back up to his forehead. The magic was instant, and his shoulders relaxed as he saw the boy he was used to in the mirror, the one with the chipped tooth and freckles and the boy who could get warmed by the sun. The sunkissed Chip, the one who wasn’t ghastly pale, the one in some stupid ass pajama pants and scars on his bare chest mixing with fiery tattoos. He forced a smile, watching his mask move with his will, stretching his hands and rolling out his neck.
