Summary
Then, quietly, she hears Zoey ask, “How long?”
Well. This is harder than them just killing her, Rumi thinks. Maybe she shouldn’t be surprised, because Zoey has always enjoyed the hunt, performing each fight like it’s a sort of game of cat-and-mouse, and this is...the same thing, Rumi thinks. Just another demon to be dealt with.
“Rumi,” Mira presses, her voice closer than it had been.
Rumi almost wants to laugh. Great. The world’s worst cat-and-mouse game, where they’re apparently treating her like a friend before they kill her. That’s great. Celine would be so proud that they’re fulfilling all their hunter duties of taking care of each other while killing demons.
“Rumi, I need you to talk to me,” Zoey says, her voice getting a little more insistent. “Can you tell me how long you’ve had these?”
“Forever,” Rumi rasps out, because, well, they’ve caught her. She’s been effortlessly caught in a trap, and there’s no use trying to gnaw off her own arm to escape it. She’s tried before; her patterns exist beyond just branding on her skin.
(or, rumi's patterns are discovered early, and maybe that's not such a bad thing)

Summary
Mira has never known gentleness.
She hardly grew up with it, being born into sharp edges and stern discipline. Her life was full of harshness from the moment she could walk; expectations and weighted demands, orders, heavy consequences for fucking up, which she seemed to be prone to doing. Gentleness and softness were two things that were never offered to her, and Mira never craved them in the first place—how can you crave something you’ve never had? The feeling was foreign to her, the idea being put into practice even more foreign, and she’s never been the type to dwell on what she didn’t have. There hardly seemed to be any point obsessing over the past and the lack of affection when the future was very, very pressing.
The real difference came in the form of Zoey.
Zoey, who has always been compassionate and kind. Zoey, who quickly became the first to act and solve problems between the three of them. Zoey, who was so sincere and caring that it caught Mira off guard the first time she was on the other end of it.
Zoey, who offered her gentleness and kindness without expecting anything in return.
(or, mira is deeply, deeply smitten with zoey)

Summary
Zoey knows what she’s going to get with the ocean, and she knows what she’s going to get with Rumi: wild unpredictability, distance in the form of someone who could never love her the same way, and desperation to fall into the water and claw her way through to the depths regardless.
The burn in her lungs has never won out. Zoey has never settled on the beach for too long, always drawn back in, always tempted, always so desperate to find herself submerged again.
The burn in her lungs has never won, and the ache in her chest is hardly about to start.
She can be good to the ocean, the ocean can even be good to her back, but that hardly means the ocean will ever be able to love her.
Zoey can know all of this, she can understand that it’s all decidedly true, and she can still choose to dive headfirst into the waves and pretend like there’s a chance any of this could be more than what it will always be.
(or, the ocean, yearning, and the first taste of loving something that can't love you back)

Summary
Zoey loves her. Zoey loves her so much that it hurts, so much that it feels like her entire body is being split apart all the time, because god, she loves her, and what else is there to do about it other than simply let it happen? Zoey has come to terms with a few things:
One. Rumi is distant and untouchable. This is intentional, because Rumi does everything intentionally, and getting close in a way that means more than what she already has is near-impossible. Unless there’s some stroke of grand luck from the honmoon itself breaking down Rumi’s walls, this is where she’s going to stand forever.
Two. Rumi can’t love her in the way Zoey wants her to. This is somewhat related to the first point, because maybe Rumi could love her back in the way Zoey wants, in a way she would need if things were to turn into more, but with how closed off she is, that remains an impossible feat. Unless something massive changes, unless Rumi shifts into someone slightly different, Zoey knows that Rumi won’t be able to give her what she’s looking for.
(or, waiting on the shore, the ocean, love, and getting so close to having something turn into more)

Summary
This time, she’s Zoey.
It takes seventy-two years this time.
Tirelessly, the years stitch together. The sun rises and sets. The hollow spot inside of her waits. She has tried to make sense of these stubborn souls and the way they come back to her, how they always, without fail, manage to weave their way back through her chest, settling perfectly in the empty space within her that stays empty longer than it stays fulfilled. It must have something to do with the way the world shifted one day, how it broke apart entirely before being put back into place, starting to spin again as if it hadn’t come to a crashing halt. At some point, Zoey’s soul came loose. At some point, two more found a home.
The hollow spot inside of her chest waits, and then there’s a tug.
The entire world shifts, stopping on its axis again, and then it begins to careen forward. Dizzyingly fast and determined and loud. Then, in a voice that has remained just as stubborn as the soul who used it first, comes the command: “Find me.”
And Zoey does.
(or, zoey and the two souls that belong to her, no matter how long it takes them to find her)

Summary
The ocean says nothing at all. It doesn’t even acknowledge her.
Rumi rolls her eyes, dropping down into a crouch. She holds her hand out, gently dipping her fingertips into the water. “Right,” she murmurs, feeling her shoulders sag. “Zoey’s the one you want. Not me.”
“She loves you. I’ve seen her surfing, and how she is here, and I just...” Rumi sighs, squeezing her eyes shut. “I want that. I can’t be...who she wants. I don’t know how. Please,” Rumi whispers. “Help me.”
The waves recede, crashing back into her a second later.
Rumi sighs, dropping her head. “Please.”
The ocean almost seems to get a little louder.
Rumi squeezes her eyes shut, her heart pounding in her chest, when she says, “I love her. Please. I love her.”
The honmoon practically erupts into song, thrilled, dancing around her; the ocean is silent.

Summary
Rumi lets out a broken, disbelieving sob, staring at herself in the mirror. She’s meant to be fixed. She’s—her patterns are gone, they’re gone, but this isn’t...she didn’t want this. She didn’t want...
The honmoon glows golden underneath her feet. She can see the ripples spread up along the walls, carefully ebbing toward her. It stings when the honmoon wraps itself around her entire body, and Rumi can only watch as she’s engulfed by the light, staring at herself, unable to turn away. It feels like an embrace, but it’s cold and wrong, and it makes her tremble even harder, because the honmoon has never felt like that. Not to her.
Quietly, in the very back of her mind, a voice says, “This is what you asked for.”
(or, the au where rumi's patterns disappear after turning the honmoon gold, with severe, unexpected consequences)

Summary
“But I’m fine,” Rumi continues, too easily. “Seriously, Mira.”
Mira feels her heart twist. All the questions she wants to ask sound insane. Why did you stop smiling at me like you used to? When did you start feeling like you had to be polite with us? Why do you cover up so much? Why don’t you spend any time with us anymore? Where are you going? Have you already left? Was it my fault? When did I stop noticing?
“Okay,” Mira says, the word burning in her mouth. “Just—you know you can talk to me or Zoey. We’re a team.”
“Soulmates,” Rumi teases, with just the slightest amount of flair to the word.
It feels off. All of it feels off, because Mira is realising Rumi hasn’t joked like this with her in a very, very long time, and she wants to laugh at it, wants to playfully start a fight, but the words only make her feel another surge of guilt, more sick to her stomach than she had been, angrier than she was just a few seconds ago.
Mira swallows back each emotion that threatens to kill her, squaring her shoulders when she says, “Something like that.”

Summary
She can tell herself that she’s not technically a demon as long as she would like, but isn’t she? Celine won’t call her one, either, she’s never been able to do that, but it’s been implied throughout her whole life. Rumi has patterns. That makes her a demon. Plain and simple.
And demons have to die.
It isn’t that Rumi wants to die, because she doesn’t, it’s just that...maybe that’s what has to happen. It’s just that she can’t stop thinking if Mira and Zoey would agree with that if they knew about her. Demons have to die. Rumi can’t stop thinking about Mira and Zoey, how there probably isn’t an exception for her on that list.
Is that why they’re not soulmates? To make it easier? Rumi doesn’t know what it would be like to have to kill your soulmate—it would have to be like killing a part of yourself, right?—so that must be why they’re not. That must be why Mira refuses to call her that. Mira doesn’t know, but there has to be a part of her that inherently knows, because they’re still hunters.

Summary
Zoey is quiet for half a second. “This is all really great information you’re giving me right now, Mir. Like, super compelling and awesome. And—you have to stop calling it your backyard when it’s literally a whole forest. Like, uh, an entire forest? Full-on-forest. Solidly not a backyard.”
“Well, it’s at the back of my house,” Mira says, almost helplessly. “I’m there. I need you to bring a trailer and come to my backyard. Like, the trailers for horses.”
“Dude,” Zoey sighs, but Mira can hear soft rustling noises, followed by the phone very clearly being set down. “Do I get to know why? You always do this to me! I swear to god if it’s a bear, Mira, I’m never going to talk to you again. You know I don’t rehabilitate bears. Do we even have bears here? Did you buy a bear just for me to have to take care of?”
“I wish I did,” Mira decides, bluntly. “That would be easier.”
Zoey makes a noise. “That’s not making me less worried, babe. I’ll be there in twenty.”
“Can you make it ten?”
“No, I cannot make it ten.”

Summary
Mira sighs, crinkling her nose as she looks away. She misses the way Rumi had been touching her. “I can make my own decisions, Rumi.”
“I didn’t know it was a choice,” Rumi says, with such a level of sincerity that it almost catches Mira off guard. “To fall in love, I mean.”
“Wasn’t,” Mira says, giving her a look. “But it definitely was a choice to stay there. One that I chose,” she continues, a little more softly. “I’m not stupid, Rumi. I knew...you. Emotionally guarded, closed off, workaholic, impossible to reach because you wouldn’t let me. I still chose you. I always would. I always will.”
Rumi laughs, laughs. Unguarded. Sharp and a little wild, and then she’s smiling, not crooked or wide, but it’s her smile, and it’s enough to make Mira start crying again. “I don’t know if those were—if those were compliments, or, oh. Mira, are you—?”
“Shut up,” Mira whispers, pressing her face into Rumi’s neck again. “You’re fucking impossible.”
Rumi’s arms are hesitantly wrapped around her shoulders, carefully holding her, always so careful. “Is that a good thing?”

Summary
You wanted her to be loved. You wanted her to know that you loved her, but how else could you show it other than by working toward those goals? For Rumi to stay safe, her patterns needed to be gone. You had been allowed to bear witness to a demon walking amongst hunters as if it was the norm; Miyeong had loved him, Kimmy had treated him like a brother. Riwoo got lucky twice, though he did not get lucky with you. You did not love him, but you allowed him to live. It seemed like the greatest offer of friendship you could give to him, but you did not want that for Rumi.
You wanted her to be loved.
And she is.
You’ve pretended for their sakes to not notice, primarily because none of them have told you directly, and you don’t want to intrude, but they aren’t subtle. You’ve been biting your tongue about that, too, because you can give them reminders about media training and what going public can bring later. For now, you want them to enjoy whatever new ground they’ve stumbled into, and it seems like they are.
You know all the signs—you were in love once, too, and you still are.
You’re so proud of all of them.

Summary
Mira draws in a slow breath, trying to ignore the way her heart races. “It’s meant to be. I haven’t kissed anyone with it.”
She ignores the fact that she hasn’t kissed anyone in a very long time. She ignores the fact related to that fact, which is mostly along the lines of, she hasn’t kissed anyone in a very long time because there are very few people she’s interested in kissing, and they’re...
Mira clears her throat, shaking her head as she goes back to buttoning up Rumi’s stupid shirt.
“Don’t let Zoey hear you say that,” Rumi suddenly teases, her hands finally moving away from Mira’s face. The relief that she feels only lasts for half a second, because then Rumi’s hands are on her shoulders, fingers tracing against her skin. “She’ll take it as a challenge. God forbid she lunges at you during dinner. Honestly, she probably will as soon as she sees you in this dress.”
“It’s—it’s just a dress,” Mira forces out with a trembling laugh that sounds a little too fake on her ears. “You need to chill.”
Rumi laughs, bright and brilliant. “Yeah, but you’re the one wearing it.”

(Problem one: it’s too fucking hot outside.
Problem two: Rumi, despite the fact that it’s too fucking hot outside, is making them spar.
Problem three: Mira managed to summon her woldo last week after struggling at it for months, so Rumi is infinitely better than her, and that is beyond frustrating in ways Mira cannot even begin to describe.
Problem four: Rumi is being too nice to her.
Problem five: Mira wants to be given a reason to snap.)
The summer heat is nearly unbearable. Every second that Mira spends out here is a second she gets angrier, and she can feel a blisteringly hot rage steadily building up in her chest.

Summary
“Hey. What do you have to worry about? I mean, if they totally, like, just outright hate you, or something...” Jinu trails off, slowly looking away from her, blinking a few times. “Yeah, that would kind of suck, wouldn’t it? Huh.”
“Jinu!” Rumi snaps, waving her hands around wildly, curling her fingers against her palms as she imagines herself strangling him. “You—you’re not helping. At all. You know what?” Rumi breathes out. “It’s fine. It’s totally fine. Maybe they’ll cancel! Hopefully they cancel, and I can just...pretend none of this ever happened, and it’ll be totally fine.”
“Totally fine,” Jinu hesitantly agrees. “They won’t hate you. If you haven’t scared them off by now, well,” Jinu snorts, and Rumi slowly turns to stare at him, her head tilting to the side ever so slightly. “Clearly they like you, is what I’m trying to say. For one reason or another.”
Rumi crinkles her nose, spinning back around on her heels. “There are multiple reasons. I’m funny, I’m charming, I’m—I’m a great listener, I’m always on time, did I mention funny?”
“You mentioned funny,” Jinu agrees, slowly.

Summary
Distantly, there’s a part of her that wants to fight against the notion that she’s going soft. Mira has been all sharp teeth and jagged edges for as long as she can remember. She suffocated whatever kindness she had inside of her by the time she hit double digits and realised that being nice wouldn’t be enough to keep her alive. Biting every hand that came close was a good of a compromise as any for her, because almost all of them would end up turning into fists; she’s never seen a reason to take the chance and get hit just for wanting something stupid like to be
heldfree from having to ice a handful of bruises.Mira has gotten good at taking care of herself. She’s gotten good at keeping people out of her head and at a distance, because that’s what she’s always done. It’s easier to forgo relationships—of any kind—entirely rather than pick through each one of them and stare at them under a microscope just on the off-chance that the person isn’t going to turn out to be some sort of monster.
Zoey and Rumi are different, though.

“Okay, seriously, what is going on with you?” Mira demands. Rumi catches a glimpse of her expression, eyes narrowed, like she’s confused rather than hurt. “This is totally, like, I don’t know, Rumi! This isn’t you. Listen, I get that things are tough, but what the hell is this?”
“It’s—”
“Don’t lie to me, Rumi,” Mira warns. “How are we meant to seal the honmoon if you’re too busy doing...whatever this is? You’re tearing yourself apart. And—what the hell was all of that? Do you seriously expect me to just, I don’t know, ignore all of that? Are you serious?”
She’s going to kill you. You should let her.
“Mira, it’s—”
“Don’t lie to me, Rumi,” Mira hisses out, her confusion turning to hurt; Rumi can see the shift in her eyes, the way she flinches back as soon as the words leave her mouth. “Please. What’s going on with you?”

Summary
She pushes her glasses back up her nose, eyes never moving from the spot on Rumi’s shoulder. Hm. They are, in fact, still there.
“Zoey,” Mira calls, keeping her voice low, not wanting to alert Rumi, because, quite frankly, she needs to talk to anyone else who isn't the source of the problem right now.
Zoey, thankfully, picks up on the tone in her voice, easily making her way over from across the compound, giving Mira a look. Mira just gestures for Zoey to get closer to her, and once Zoey is shoulder-to-shoulder with her, Mira gestures over toward Rumi.
There’s a pause.
“Huh,” Zoey decides, frowning. “That’s...” she trails off, waving a hand as she tilts her head to the side. “Different.”
“Something like that,” Mira agrees, crossing her arms over her chest. “Rumi has patterns.”

Summary
Mira scoffs again, but she’s sure it hardly comes across given how hard she’s smiling. “You literally have given me no time to move, Zoey,” Mira helpfully reminds her, shifting so she’s facing the door; she’s never liked having her back to any door, even here in the hanok. Habit, or whatever. “There. Comfortable. Exceedingly comfortable. Your bed is great, Zo. Are you happy?”
Mira feels like the air has been punched out of her lungs when she feels Zoey’s arms snake around her, one of Zoey’s legs hooking on top of her own, with Zoey’s head coming to settle against her shoulder, breath warm against Mira’s ear when she murmurs, “Yup. This is the best day of my life, actually.”
“Yeah?” Mira asks, her voice coming out far too shaky.
“Uh-huh,” Zoey agrees, without a beat of hesitation. “Is this okay?”
“Yeah,” Mira whispers, feeling her breath hitch in her throat.

Summary
She tosses another pebble up into the air, catching it with her other hand, and then launches it up at the window. Another successful hit.
This time, the window opens.
Zoey immediately grins so hard it hurts her face, raising her hand up to wave at Rumi, who looks mostly confused at first, then shocked, and then she starts to smile back down at Zoey in a way that has never once failed to make Zoey’s heart stop.
“Zoey—”
“You know Rapunzel, right?” Zoey cuts her off, because this is important, and she’s been having that thought since she got here and decided that Rumi needed to have a little more excitement in her life rather than just walking through the front door.
Rumi squints at her. It’s dark, and she’s far away, but Zoey can tell. “Don’t even start.”
