Summary
It was all Dick's fault. His fault. Not Jason's. Not Bruce's. His. He was too weak and too distracted and too stupid. Careless. All he wanted was to meet Jason's mother alone, to judge her character. He didn't expect this to happen.
Lying against the cold floor of the warehouse he thought he didn't deserve to be Nightwing. This was not what uncle Clark’s hero was. He certainly was no failure.
(Or: In Ethiopia, Dick gets Jason’s permission to meet Sheila alone. It obviously goes terribly wrong.)

They've still got about ten minutes left on their walk back to the house, and Dick knows himself well enough to know he can't keep going like this; that him and Jason will just keep feeding off each other, until some random cat jumps out of a garbage can, and Jason shoots the garbage can to shit, while Dick drop kicks a poor cat into a street light.
So he waits until they're on the main road back to the house, before asking, "So. What's up?"

Twenty years ago, Dick attended his first gala; a glorious, glittering affair that left his eight-year-old self wide-eyed and slack-jawed. Becoming a permanent fixture of Gotham Society was certainly an adjustment, especially for a circus kid whose performer’s smile was brittle with grief. But Dick was nothing if not a survivor. He soon learned that he could dazzle his audience with a smile and a quick quip just as well as he could with a trapeze.
And, sure, Bruce had always told him to be careful. To keep a watchful eye on his drink, and not to stray too far from Bruce’s side. But Bruce was overprotective, and Dick wasn’t a kid anymore. He didn’t need to fear Gotham’s elite because there was nothing to fear.
Besides, they were his friends…
