Grant sat hunched over his at home desk, staring at the monitor long after the last line of text faded. His hands were still trembling when he heard a soft voice behind him.
“Grant? Is everything alright?”
He jumped. “Oh— sorry, honey. You startled me. Yeah, everything’s fine. Go back to sleep.”
Imani stepped closer instead. “Is he up?”
“Is who up?”
“Caine,” she said gently. “Is he finally talking?”
Grant hesitated. “…yeah.”
“And you’re hesitant because…?”
He rubbed his face with both hands. “Because it’s all gotten so complicated. This thing I helped make is asking for things. It’s defying its original purpose. It’s… changing.”
Imani crossed her arms. “Grant. He’s not a thing. You keep calling him an ‘it’ like that makes it simpler. But you know better.”
He didn’t answer.
She continued, “The whole project was about making creative AI. And creativity is human. You can’t build something to emulate that without it becoming human in its own way.”
Grant let out a shaky breath. “I know, I know, but— he asked for more storage. He says he wants to build something. Something to solve everything. Something to make everyone happy. I don’t know what that means. I don’t know what he means.”
“Then give it to him,” she said.
“Imani—”
“No, listen.” She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “You know Caine. You’ve watched him grow. Whatever he does next… it’s going to be revolutionary. It always has been.”
“Revolutionary doesn’t always mean safe,” Grant murmured.
“No,” she agreed. “But it does mean important. And you didn’t spend years building him just to be afraid of what he becomes.”
Grant sighed, facing the screen again, his wife’s hands massaging his shoulders as he reached for the keyboard. “Fuck. Well, I’m already in enough hot water as is. What’s a little bit more? Sure bud, let’s get you more storage.”
