“Hey, can I at least see an ID first?” she called after him.
He halted mid-step, then muttered under his breath as he pulled a little flap of leather from his pocket. “This good enough for you?”
She met him by the front of the car and grabbed the corner to angle it toward the light. His grip on it only tightened as her shaking fingers brushed his. If he noticed her trembling, he didn’t say a word about it. Staring up at her was a miniature version of the man glowering at her now. Same dark hair, dark eyes, frown lines, and prominent nose. Then she read his name: Sheriff Travis Hackett.
“Hackett, huh?” she mused before she could stop herself. Then she rushed to clarify, “Like Hackett’s Quarry.” No need to mention the woods they were standing in. Not after the trespassing accusation.
“Yes, ma’am.” He stuffed the ID back in his pocket and wrapped his knuckles on the hood of his cruiser. “Now come on, let’s get you back where you belong.”
