hey, xue yang.
it's been 2 years since you died, but i still don't really know what to say to you.
right now as i'm writing this, lan zhan's waiting in the car. usually when i visit people to pay my respects, like my parents and uncle jiang and madame yu, i write the notes beforehand. for some reason, the words wouldn't come for you. so i guess i'll try to write something meaningful while sitting on the floor in front of you.
you know what? i think the first thing i want to say is fuck you! because this morning i woke up next to lan zhan (well, more like lan zhan woke me up), and even though we've been dating for two years and i've shared a bed with him pretty much every one of those nights, i still think i'm incredibly lucky. also, according to certain doctors i tried my very best not to listen to, i'm lucky to be waking up at all. so fuck you, xue yang. every new memory i make with the ones i love, every second i spend with lan zhan, every damn moment of every damn day is precious to me. and you wanted to take that all away. fuck you! fuck you, dude! wow!
okay, i might be angrier than i thought, even after 2 years. that's why i'm here.
i feel like another thing i want to say to you is i'm sorry. i looked into you a while ago and what i learned was really... i don't know. i know you hated people pitying you. you wouldn't want my pity. but you lost so much at a young age and the world just kept taking from you. that doesn't justify what you did to me, but i think now i really understand why you were so desperate. i'm sorry that i was the only one who was kind to you. i'm sorry that you didn't get the help you needed. i'm sorry that everyone's arms pushed you away when they should've held you. and i'm sorry that you died like that. i know that you wanted to take care of me and protect me from people who didn't "appreciate" me. you were trying to make me happy the only way you knew how. xue yang, possession and control isn't how you love someone, and it's a little heartbreaking that no one taught you differently. i guess i'm sorry about that too.
i think what i want you to know most of all is that i'm happy. i really am. i honestly didn't know that i would ever be this happy!! so if you were worried about me, you don't have to be. i'm really really happy. i don't know about reincarnation or alternate universes or whatnot, but if there are things like that, i hope that you're happy too. i hope that your next life will be kinder, and that you'll find love and understanding and open arms.
i'm not sure if i'll come visit again. i think i might. until then, i also hope that, wherever you are right now, you're better than you were here. maybe you found your parents. maybe you met mine. sorry if mom slapped you!

LAN XICHEN: Is there any chance I can convince you to wait 'til the morning after Wei Ying's birthday to propose?
LAN ZHAN: No.
LAN XICHEN: It was worth a try.
LAN XICHEN: Ah, well, at least I won't owe Jiang Wanyin. He said that Wei Ying would be the one to propose, and that it would be in the spring. Can you believe that?
LAN ZHAN: Xiongzhang. The three of you staked real money on this?
LAN XICHEN: More than just the three of us! A-Li will be swimming in money at the end of the week, haha.
LAN ZHAN: Xiongzhang.
LAN XICHEN: Sorry Wangji, I have a meeting coming up in a few minutes! Call me later if you want to continue discussing your proposal.
LAN XICHEN: And good luck!
LAN XICHEN: Also, if you feel too tired after Wei Ying's birthday celebration, remember that waiting until the next morning is an option!
LAN ZHAN: It is not.
LAN XICHEN: Haha! Of course it isn't!

@diegoz_666 there's no way in hell that they'll ever break up lol they're both whipped. my cousin worked as a techie on the untamed and said that they were like planets constantly gravitating towards each other... and that was months before they officially announced they were dating.

They've been dating for around 2 years and they've also known each other since they were teenagers, so I feel like they could get engaged any day now???
LOL My sister and her husband were high school sweethearts and dated for 6 years before getting married. On the other hand, my friend met a guy at a bar 11 months ago and they just got engaged. It really depends on the couple!

"You're the best," Lan Jingyi slurs, head lolling to the side as Wen Yuan and Ouyang Zizhen try to coax him to put on his shoes. "I love you guys so much."
Next to Wei Ying, Jin Ling looks on in fascinated horror. "He's so drunk," he says. "He's so drunk, oh my God. I'm— Should I record this? Should I be recording this right now?"
Lan Xichen's mild smile is still fixed firmly on his face despite his obvious wince. "I imagine Jingyi would be quite embarrassed if you did."
"I looove you guys," Lan Jingyi says before Jin Ling can reply. He then spots Lan Xichen, whose smile is now rather strained, and gasps. "Baba! Baba, I love you too!"
"Baba loves A-Yi as well," Lan Xichen replies. He crouches down, gently peels Lan Jingyi's clumsy fingers from the tangled shoelaces, and quickly ties a neat bow. He straightens and gestures at Wen Yuan and Ouyang Zizhen, who gratefully hand over his stumbling son.
"Ready to go?" he asks, petting Lan Jingyi's unruly hair, and the boy's nose scrunches.
"Nooo," Lan Jingyi moans. "Have to tell Yuan-gege that I love him most!"
Wen Yuan looks like he wants to sink through the floor. Jin Ling looks like he very much regrets not getting any of this on camera. Wei Ying bites his lip and trains his eyes on the ceiling, praying for the strength to refrain from laughing until poor Jingyi isn't around to hear it.
Lan Xichen clears his throat and gives Wen Yuan a sheepish smile. "I apologize if he made you uncomfortable. All Lans are notorious lightweights." He nods at the frozen boys, cheerily wishes Wei Ying a happy birthday, and drags his son out the door with a strange twinkle in his eye.
"Don't," Wen Yuan says miserably when Wei Ying turns to him. His face is bright red. "Xian-gege, seriously don't."
"I won't say anything! Promise," Wei Ying says, holding his hands up in surrender.
Jin Ling, because he has no sense of self-preservation, cackles obnoxiously. "'Yuan-gege,' oh my God," he wheezes. Ouyang Zizhen makes a frantic cutting gesture across his throat as Wen Yuan's expression darkens. "I really should've recorded that, holy shit. Hey, Yuan-gege, what—"
The punch to the arm is unexpected but not undeserved. Jin Ling whines about it anyway.
By ten o'clock, the few remaining guests have left, aware that it is very late by the rigid Lan sleep standards. After walking his sister's family to their car and squeezing Jin Ling into one last hug, Wei Ying immediately starts collecting the dirty dishes. He's the kind of person who believes that tonight's mess should be cleaned up by tomorrow's Wei Ying, but when he moved in with Lan Zhan, the other man had made his disapproval of that practice very clear.
Wei Ying turns on the sink faucet and sluices hot water over the sauce-covered dishes. "You know, you might be on to something, Lan Zhan!" he calls over his shoulder. "If I clean up now, that means I won't have to scrape crystallized food off our plates in the morning. Who knew?"
"Wei Ying." Lan Zhan's voice trembles slightly.
The other man frowns and rolls up his sleeves to tug on the dishwashing gloves. "Okay, I know I'm not supposed to be in the kitchen, but I'm washing dishes, not blowing anything up!"
"Wei Ying." There's a muted thud. "Turn around."
Wei Ying turns around. Lan Zhan is down on one knee on the kitchen floor, holding out a small black box. Inside, two shining silver rings are nestled on a plush cushion. Wei Ying drops the gloves.
"Lan Zhan...?"
"Wei Ying." Lan Zhan's golden eyes gaze earnestly up at him. "I love you. I love you more than I have loved anyone else. I do not expect this to change, because I love you more with every day that goes by. I have loved you since we were sixteen, and I will love you into the next life and every life after."
He takes a deep breath. "I do not know how to be without you anymore. I do not want to be without you. A-Ying," he says, and Wei Ying's heart completely melts. "Will you marry me?"
Wei Ying chokes back a sob as he nods, darting down and bowling Lan Zhan over with the force of his hug. "Yes!" he says, voice muffled in Lan Zhan's neck. He turns and kisses the extremely red earlobe next to his cheek. Lan Zhan's arms tighten around him. "Yes, Lan Zhan! I'll marry you."
As it turns out, the floor is not a very comfortable place to lie down on. Lan Zhan maneuvers them into a sitting position, and Wei Ying's breath catches at the sight of those sure hands closing around one of the rings. Lan Zhan's smile is small but radiant as he slips the ring onto Wei Ying's left middle finger, and it grows when Wei Ying returns the gesture.
"Wow," Wei Ying murmurs. "We— Wow. We're engaged."
"Mm." Lan Zhan looks unbearably fond.
Wei Ying buries his face in Lan Zhan's shoulder again. "We're engaged! And I love you so much!"
"Love Wei Ying too."
Wei Ying pulls back, knowing that his grin is so wide he probably looks deranged, but it doesn't matter because Lan Zhan loves him no matter what he looks like, and they're engaged. Holy shit. They're engaged. Wei Ying is engaged to the actual fucking love of his life.
They're silent for a moment, basking in their warm contentment.
Wei Ying clears his throat. "So," he says.
Lan Zhan cocks his head, eyes inquisitive. What the hell, Wei Ying loves him so much. "So," he parrots.
"An autumn wedding," Wei Ying says.
The other man's lips twitch. "Mm."
"That's like, almost exactly a year from now."
"...Is the current season not autumn?"
"Hah! Jie will kill me if she doesn't have at least six months to plan my wedding. But thanks, Lan Zhan, that was very funny."
"Hm."
"Um." Wei Ying chews on his bottom lip for a moment. "Just making sure— We're having sex after this, right? It's my birthday and you just proposed to me. I know it's way past your bedtime, but I really think you should fuck me."
Lan Zhan swallows. "That can be arranged."
Wei Ying pats his cheek. "Cool. Because I wanna blow you. But this floor is horrible on my knees, so we should probably move to the— ah!"
He lets out a delighted shriek of laughter when Lan Zhan gathers him up and stands in one fluid motion before nearly flying to the bedroom.
