Summary
He recognized the purpose of the wrap fairly quickly, thinking of the times in recent years where he had to wrap his own injured joints while unable to afford a health potion. And when the Shadowhand graciously taught him a couple dunamancy spells in exchange for future favors, this revelation led to Caleb piecing together the purpose of the metal around each of Essek’s fingers, Caleb watching them closely as the other caster demonstrated his spell. They were splints.

Home.
It had never meant anything to Essek. A tower sterile beyond his laboratory with spells and chalk and components scattered in a haphazard way he’d be embarrassed to show anyone else. A family he’d grown distant from almost a century ago. A religion and government he’d silently scorned by refusing their most sacred offer.
He had a lot of things he loved and missed about Rosohna, but the city had never been home until a house of eclectic adventurers with a giant, glittering tree moved in and asked him to dinner.

Rexxentrum should not be a safe harbor for a man like Essek Thelyss, but Caleb Widogast's well-stocked cottage on Maple Hill is. So it is never a surprise for Caleb to come home to find the object of his affection passed out, gently snoring on his couch, a dusty tome in one hand and an empty vial of healing potion in the other.
What is a surprise is coming home to find Essek sprawled on the kitchen floor, sluggishly bleeding and still as a stone.

The music swelled, elegantly matched pairs spinning past each other across the floor where the dance carried them. Weaving behind the pillars and braziers of glowing coals lining the hall, Caleb scanned over the shifting sea of guests for his husband. His husband. Oh gods.
It still sounded strange. His husband. Good, decidedly good, but strange, making his heart stumble over itself dangerously. The thought put the most fragile, fluttering sensation in his chest that he had yet to put words to and a stupid grin on his face when he wasn’t being careful. And he was presently being exceptionally careful. These nations were allies, technically, but their elite—his guests—bared their teeth at one another more than they did smile. If they made it through the night without any bloodshed at this anniversary of the peace, that alone would be worth celebrating.

For the life of him, Essek cannot figure out how it was done. He doesn’t recall so much as brushing against the other man as he escorted the Mighty Nein out of the Lucid Bastion.
Yet when he returns to his office, there it is, tucked into a nearly invisible pocket in his mantle — a piece of subpar parchment folded to vaguely resemble a cat’s face with tiny pointed ears.

It feels like a secret. Like the darkest part of him cracked open; all his months and years of hiding, of wrapping his arms and scratching the bindings, of not loving, not loving anything but an unkillable cat — it’s unraveling around him. He feels naked. He feels the way he did the first time Pumat Sol spelled him clean.
“I find that — I would like you to know me,” he says, again.
