    Summary

Sometimes life came at you with a clenched fist and Ilya had never figured out how to duck.

So here he was, twenty-eight years old, single, dealing with the fallout from injuries given to him by the game he loved, and the second youngest assistant coach in the league to one of the worst teams. Stability was hard to come by, but he was managing.

Then along came Shane Hollander to knock him on his ass, one more time.

    Summary

“He wounds, Cub. You are aware of that.”

“Yes. But he also heals. What we saw of him back then was also a reflection of us. He became what he needed to be in order to do his duties. We were hostile to one another, Stakh. Imagine how it was for us and how it was for an outsider… how it still is for an outsider.” Artemy looked down. It’s been months since the plague ended and still others treated Dankovsky like a stranger. He treated himself as a stranger. Calling him any other thing would have felt disingenuous... but it still felt wrong.

“Of course. Humans need to adapt to their surroundings to live and survive. But snakes do not adapt when their skins shed, nor do they become anew. They become more of what they already are.” Rubin spoke slowly, choosing his words with either care or caution while looking at Daniil’s signature coat on the rack.

    Summary

Daniil Dankovsky's life, it seems, has been in a perpetual state of getting weirder ever since he had to transfer to a small rural college. With a grand total of three people he can call friends (maybe, if you squint, and really stretch the definition) and the sudden revelation that none of his professors really believe him when he says he plans to defeat death before he graduates, you could say that he's... fine. He's fine. Stop asking, okay?

For Artemy Burakh, life has always been strange. The next in line to inherit a sacred blood-right of a dying people, he's neglected to tell his father that he won't be continuing that bloodline unless he manages to find a man who can pull off the whole "having a child" thing. But, given that the pickings on those are slim and he can hardly get a text back as it is, things aren't looking too hot for him. He also has a nasty habit of trying to raise two children he found outside on a budget of the scant money he can get in grants and whatever the locals will pay for Twyrine. But it's... fine. He's fine. He doesn't like to talk about it, okay?

Twyrine is illegal, life is fleeting, and goddammit, it's really hard to take care of yourself sometimes.

    Summary

He thinks about what a fucking miracle it is that he’s still alive, and his chest tightens again.

The problem with survival isn’t the here and now, Artemy is beginning to realise; that’s easy. Here and now, what matters is taking another breath, is pushing through whatever is happening into the next moment. Doing what you need to get done when your life is on the line and, by proxy, the lives of countless others, isn’t the hardest part.

That is what comes after, when you’re no longer gasping for air, when there are no longer singular moments to gather your thoughts but an endless stretch of time ahead of you with no more looming disaster to take your mind off of the future.

Now, that’s where he finds himself; in the future, inside that vague notion of hope he was clinging to for weeks as he sprinted across town, plague clouds chasing his heels, herbs and bottles and raw human organs jostling around in his medic bag, dead bodies left in his wake. The whole time, the future was on his mind, getting himself and his children and his friends to it, and now it’s here and he doesn’t know what to do when he’s stopped running.
