Summary
Mike has spent twenty years preparing for a future he never chose. As a promising young knight-in-training, he spends his days learning how to serve a kingdom he has never wanted to belong to.
One afternoon, he’s nearly killed in the forest. A stranger saves him, a Cleric who can’t speak, fragile-looking and frightened, with magic that Mike has been taught should no longer exist.
He goes back to the forest looking for the young man who saved his life, expecting answers and finding something far more complicated instead.
Somewhere along the way, Mike learns to listen to what isn’t said, earns a trust neither of them gives easily, and discovers a life beyond the one chosen for him. Mike never imagined that Will would show him a life worth choosing, and become someone he would risk everything to protect.

"Mommy, look!"
Will glanced to his left to find a middle-aged woman holding hands with a small girl.
"The puppy is licking him! Ew!" She giggled, pointing towards the scene where Mike continued lick excitedly at Will's face.
"Yes, baby, but dogs lick instead of giving kisses. His dog must love him very much if it's giving him so many kisses."
Though Will barely registered the words, they finally seemed to give Mike pause. His licking gradually slowed to a stop, head turning back to the strangers, then to Will again.
Or: Mike spends 16 hours as a dog. Will likes it.

The guy’s one of the demon mask people — of course, he is, why wouldn’t he be? — and Will swears he can see the cogs turning in his brain, trying to make up a comeback to say to Spider-Man that he can brag about to his friends later, but unfortunately for him, his thought process is promptly cut off by a golden candle holder to the back of the head.
He drops to the floor with a loud thud, but Will’s not looking at him; he’s looking at who knocked him out.
Mike Wheeler, stood there with a grin way too big for the situation they’re currently in, greeting Will with a breathless, “Hey, man, what’s up?”
Will sets out on a mission, and bumps into his boyfriend on the way.
