The twenty-two days after Dubai. Daniel’s turning. Armand, in disintegration.
This, he thought wildly, carelessly—this all because of you. He was unaware at first that he was no longer directing the wounded patter of his thoughts toward Louis. A second person was taking shape in his mind, a darker and a richer shadow. How could it have taken him so long to turn his attentions here? Where his desperate beseeching of Louis unraveled him, kept him witless and volitionless, his wounded loathing of Daniel was fecund and stabilizing. It brought clarity to these unclear days. Instead of craving Louis’s forgiveness Armand could imagine the cooling balm of Daniel’s future suffering. He could remind himself that Daniel would soon die, loveless and unloved, without even his children to weep over him. He spent hours relishing the thought, envisioning it, noticing every fine and pristine detail.
