Twenty-three. Close to finishing college. Working at the same cafe you have for years, the one just two blocks down the road.

But what happens when you can't figure out a regular you've had for two months now? What happens when his reserved, tired demeanor does nothing to help the way you magnetize toward him? What happens when you both start to give in to the tension, despite your very different lives?

Slowly, your fingers trace the grooves of his face; scars, veins, and blemishes alike. "And what do they call you, sir?" You ask into the darkness.

The man tenses under your touch, and enormous palms rise to grasp your hands, rough fingers grazing over your knuckles. "I do not have a name," he rasps, and by then, you must notice how otherworldly he sounds. "I do not need a name."

Your brows furrow as your thumbs continue to follow along the deep lines on his cheeks, down his chin. "And what, pray tell, would you have me call you? Everyone needs a name."

Perhaps, he thinks, I'd like for you to call me yours.

Or, The Creature secludes himself in an abandoned manor many years after his father's death. He expects what his elongated life has already provided him—loneliness, disappointment, longing. He does not, however, expect you.

“Well,” he said, voice low, unreadable, almost teasing. “This is a surprise.”

You swallowed the knot in your throat and turned around, not because you wanted to face him—but because the weight of his presence demanded it.

“Not really,” you tried to sound breezy. Light. Detached. “I was just dropping something off—”

    Click.

The sound of the lock sliding into place was too deliberate. Too calm.

Zayne shrugged off his lab coat. The stark white fabric fell in slow motion over the back of the chair, and then he rolled his shoulders—tight, tired, tense. You watched his fingers unbutton his cuffs, rolling up his sleeves slowly, with practiced ease.

Curtains drawn. Room dimming. Silence folding over itself.

“I sincerely hope,” he murmured as he walked toward you, past you, pulling each curtain shut until the room felt private, secretive—dangerous, “it’s not another envelope.”

    OR

An arranged marriage built on silence unravels into a love loud enough to echo—where a repressed heart finally claims what was always his.

    “You don’t get it.”

“Well, of course I don’t get it,” he says. “You’ve barely said anything about it.”

“Because it’s hard, all right?” Maybe you shouldn’t eat the rest of the mango. You might rip the poor thing to shreds, make a mess of yourself and his desk, all in the name of what? Showing your hand, too? “Don’t you see how hard it is to put your life on the line every day, without a second thought, and then choke up over… over…”

Sylus doesn’t give you the words. “Go on,” he says. “Say it.”

Your jaw tightens. He drew it out of you. The words on your tongue and the heat in your face. That’s what you’ll say later, if anyone asks. “Over sex, okay?”

Or: Night of Secrecy was supposed to happen. Supposed to. Except it didn’t. And there’s a reason why it didn’t.
