Summary
Dreams have not been kind to her after Byroden, even less so after the tomb. Nightmares are commonplace. She should be used to this. She isn't. It’s terrifying now in the same way it was terrifying last week.
Then there comes the sound of knocking, followed by a voice. Percy’s light accent on the other side of the door is the most familiar, comforting, and frightening sound she’s ever heard. “Vex? Dear, are you alright?”
She inhales sharply and tries to make her voice sound more like itself. “Yes, darling, I’m fine.”
Percy has always been good at seeing through her, so it’s no surprise that he sees through the facade immediately. “Can I come in?”
Vex wants to deny him, but she’s never been good at that. Even with the door between them, she can just imagine his pleading blue eyes, and maybe she wants to drown herself in them. So her shaky voice whispers allowance and the door swings open, and there in the doorframe is the cause of her recent nightmares and subject of her kinder dreams.

Percy’s late for dinner again. This isn’t uncommon - honestly, before they’d gotten together, Vex is pretty sure the only reason Percy ate regularly was that he would be dragged (down from his room, or up from his workshop as the case may be) to eat with them: left to his own devices his timekeeping goes out the window.
So- she knows to expect this. She’d known to expect this from before they’d gotten together - this is standard Percy behaviour, losing track of time. But… it’s one thing to know and another thing to experience. It’s one thing to know his terrible timekeeping but also to have the evidence of how readily he makes time for her and projects for her and for her worries. It’s one thing to be aware it might happen, it’s another for it to happen three days in a row and god but she wishes she could rely on him to be there.
There are days, especially recently, when she’d really like for him to be there.

It started with something Karen said to her in the kitchen.
Well, not really. It actually started a few weeks beforehand, when Joyce first confided in Hopper that she thought Jonathan was acting strangely. They were in the tunnels, testing the network out against the map of Hawkins they’d spent the past month and a half drafting. Hop came to a full stop. When he turned to meet her gaze, he looked almost amused. “Well yeah,” he said, fond in the way that meant he was humoring her, “All that pot he’s been smoking will do that to a kid. I gotta say Joyce, I'm a little surprised you let him—"
But Joyce didn't hear the rest of the sentence. Pot? The word seemed to land with a clunk on the floor of the tunnel, where it sat heavily between them, impossible to ignore.
Now that the Byers are back in Hawkins, Joyce has started slowly putting the pieces together about her firstborn. On the eve of the end of the world, she wants to talk to her son about college.
Or, Jonathan and Joyce have a long overdue conversation.
