Crystal didn’t mean to pick up a familiar. It sounds like a rather stupid idea, really. She’s not a witch. She doesn’t get her powers from spells and potions and ingredients and the like.
No, she gets it from the things rooted deep inside of her. From the roots that she has to the past that she is still trying and failing to figure out. From the souls of all of the women that came before her, who refused to give in, who refused to let injustice happen, who refused to let wounds go untended, who refused to let go of themselves no matter what the world did to them, staying as strong as the tree woven from all of their souls.
So why the fuck is Monty human, now, shivering on the ground, on his knees before her, head bowed in surrender, with the feeling of his life winding around her fingers, just begging to be broken, just begging to be yanked.
Monty is alive. Monty is alive, and here, and-
And Niko is dead. Niko is dead.
Niko is dead, and Crystal knows that she could so easily blame Monty.
(After Esther is taken away by Lilith, Crystal is "gifted" Monty as a familiar. Currently wracked by grief, this makes for some...interesting results.)

Summary
When Niko, working her way through the Dead Boy Detective Agency's entire extensive library, finds a way to banish David back to Hell once and for all, Crystal can't say no to her. It doesn't matter how much she doubts her own capabilities or if she doesn't really want to face David again. They need to get rid of him. For the agency. For Crystal herself.
Except David isn't interested in going quietly into that good night, and their carefully laid out banishment doesn't work. And Charles? Charles has never been interested in seeing his friends hurt. When David tries to pull Crystal through one of his portals, Charles takes her place. Now, while Niko hangs back at the office to come up with another solution to banish David, Crystal and Edwin have to track David down before he can destroy Charles' existence, send him back to Hell, and, oh yeah, turns out what they need might be genuine forgiveness from one of David's victims—aka, Crystal's old friends.

The view along this path is beautiful; the jagged peaks of the other mountains around them are cast in dramatic light and shadow as the afternoon goes on, making the snow gleam like a jewel. She can’t help but notice the way Jaskier’s hair catches the light, seeming almost gold where it shines. She smiles to herself. Geralt is missing out.
This, of course, is when the mountain collapses.
After an avalanche, Jaskier is trapped and Yennefer can't get him out without injuring him. She stays with him until Geralt finds them and does her best to keep him warm.

The crow hopped closer, then, until it was almost atop Geralt’s hand. He caught a flash of something shiny around its leg, but when he made to reach for it, the crow skittered backwards, making another low rattle and fluffing up its feathers.
“It’s alright, I just want to look,” Geralt soothed, stilling his hand. The rattle stopped, and the bird hopped hesitantly closer. Geralt waited for it to come to him, motionless and patient. Only when it perched on his hand did he bring it closer, peering intently at its leg.A silver chain, so fine as to be nearly invisible to the eye, wound its way around the crow’s leg. This close, he could see the barely-there, shimmering aura around it—it was surely enchanted. A binding charm.
Geralt whistled lowly. “No ordinary crow, then,” he surmised, though he’d already known. “Human?”
The crow rattled its displeasure at the term—so it wasn’t transfigured, then. But it was still clearly sentient— “Ah,” Geralt said. “A shifter.”

Summary
Curious as the bard’s competence in a knife fight may be, it’s not completely unfounded. The bard has been travelling with Geralt —the famed White Wolf, the best fighter in Kaer Morhen— for a decade, if not more. It makes sense that Geralt would want his partner to be able to defend himself from possible threats. Especially since said partner, from what little —or a lot— Eskel has heard, draws in trouble like a flame draws in moths.
Still, this technique with the dagger is like nothing Eskel has ever seen in his eight decades of living.
Or: Eskel is in love with Jaskier, thinking that Jaskier is with Geralt while Jaskier is hiding a mountain of secrets
