“We should go over base rules,” George says. No greeting or anything.
“Sure,” Sapnap says, peering around. He’s struggling to take it in because of the darkness, and the alpha’s scent seeping into the soft tissue of his brain like an infection.
“I’ve set up the sofa for you, but you’re welcome to share my bed if you’d rather that, I don’t care. Take anything you want from the kitchen, I bought a bunch of snack food and stuff like that. Sports drinks, energy bars. You can order in if you want but I won’t be paying for that. Bathroom’s just through there.”
“Okay,” Sapnap says. The room is pretty bare. A small, neat kitchen, a table with two chairs, half a dividing wall splitting the dining area and the living area, which has a tv and a single couch, piled with blankets.
“If you want you can just set up out here and I can stay in my room.”
“I don’t mind hanging out with you,” Sapnap shrugs. “Dunno about sharing a bed, I guess we can see how it goes. Are you in rut yet, or…?”
“On the cusp, I think,” George says. “Couple of hours away. Enough time for you to settle in.”

Summary
From an outsider’s perspective, it would seem as though they’d both moved on. That they had both licked their wounds and broke their patterns of over-dependency. Of course, romantic feelings don’t disappear just because one thinks they should, or that they have to. But George had truly healed; he was no longer sad about their failed relationship, he was able to spend time with Sapnap normally again — whether it be the occasional call in comfy-chat or the days-long video recordings — and it didn’t hurt anymore. He was just glad they were able to go back to being friends.
