“Stick out your tongue,” Mike said.
Will frowned. “What?”
“Stick out your tongue.”
“Why?"
“Just do it.”
Though Will’s eyes flickered with confusion, he stuck out his tongue, startling pink and wet. Mike wondered how a tongue could even be that pink. Slick and glistening in the soft light of sundown.
“Further.”
“Mike!” Will protested, pulling back and hiding his mouth with his hand. “What are you up to?”
“Just trust me,” Mike said, deadly serious. “Close your eyes and stick out your tongue.”
After a disastrous end to their summer, where Mike offers to kiss Will since he has never been kissed before, Will distances himself from Mike when he leaves for college. While Will moves on from the boy who will never love him back, Mike stays behind in Hawkins, questioning everything he thought he knew about himself.

Summary
As children, their height difference had always been something that made Will’s stomach flip-flop in that familiar, weightless manner. Fluttery, before he had ever known what it meant.
Mike would never loom over him, ominous and terrifying like adults were.
Now, with a few years and a handful of growth spurts between them, the difference isn’t as obvious. If Will stood up at full length, he’d meet Mike’s eye with ease. But Will has never learned how to control himself around Mike. So he makes himself smaller, without really meaning to.

“It’s just that I haven’t seen anyone in—ages.” A flake of ash drifted down onto Will's shirt. “I mean, Mike, especially… it’s gonna be so weird.”
Kim hummed sympathetically. “You think so?”
“I know so,” Will said. He handed her the joint and rolled onto his side. “It’s, like—I don’t know how to explain it. We used to be—I mean—I used to be… he was everything. I couldn’t see beyond him, like…” He let out a little laugh. “I don’t know. I feel like seeing him again will be like relapsing, or something.”
Kim smiled. “You need, like, a safety plan,” she said. “If you think you’re gonna relapse on Mike, you call me.”
Will laughed. “Yeah, okay,” he said. “Deal.”

“So,” Will prompts, when Mike still doesn’t offer up any information on the mysterious stack of papers tucked under his arm. “Are you having a party?”
“Oh, no,” Mike says, sounding like it might be the first time ever in his life that he is genuinely disappointed about this fact. He shifts and grabs the stack of flyers, sort of waving them through the air. “These are just for this game I play?” The inflection on the end of what should be a statement makes it sound more like a hesitant question.
“And in this one, you act like you’re… vampires?”
Or: To get out of the sexual rut he’s stuck in, Popular!Will gets dared to ask out Nerd!Mike and ends up attending a Vampire the Masquerade LARP where they proceed to put the ‘role-play’ into ‘live action role-play.’
