    April 2017, Montreal. Shane is hit cleanly. Ilya drops his gloves, his stick, and his helmet; he is beside Shane before he has decided to be. He gets in the ambulance in his skates. He tells Hayden Pike why.

    The bloodwork comes back three days later. Cancer.

    What follows is the worst weather of their lives. They could crumble. They could run — they have both run before, they are good at it, and the year gives them a hundred reasons. Instead, they stand in it. They put their hands on each other and hold, and when one goes down, the other gets him up, and neither of them stays the strong one for long.

    Around them, holding too: a mother who will not sleep, a best friend who has to learn how to be a good one, a teammate who picks up the phone at three in the morning, a man down the hall in a red silk robe who has been loved, unafraid, and out for longer than Ilya has been alive.

    It takes a year. It costs them everything they thought they were.

    They come out the other side. Still chirping. Still each other's.

    If you’re looking for a fanfic that goes far beyond the usual tropes, this one is worth your time. I rarely recommend fics, and I usually stick to humor and fluff, but this story defies that. It’s appears researched, and a heartbreakingly real portrayal of our favorite couple facing cancer, surrounded by family, friends, and the kind of hospital staff that feel pulled straight from real life. It’s a story of love, resilience, and the people who hold you up when everything falls apart. It’s honest, emotional, with unexpected humor and warmth. I don’t know how it ends yet, but the journey is powerful.

    After the tuna melt incident but before Shane can reconcile with Ilya, he gets seriously injured on the ice. While in a coma he lives an alternate life where he hadn't run out if Ilya that day, where he'd actually stayed.

    However once he wakes up, he realises the beautiful life he had didn't really exist at all and Ilya isn't there (or is he?), So he's intent on remedying that in any way he can.

    This time he's adamant on staying, so when Ilya gets the news that his father has passed, he's not alone to tend to his grief, Shane and the Hollander's are there.

    Includes Lily is Ilya reveal. Good parent Hollanders. Good friends JJ and Hayden. Even Zane Boodram gets to shoot his shot (in a purely hockey way).

    He figures Ilya would be pretty surprised if he showed up to his house out of the blue. Surprised enough to be put off, probably. Shane is way too bad of a liar to think of any plausible excuse. If this is really happening, if Shane is actually by some miracle getting another shot at this, then he’s going to have to play this smart. His impatience to see Ilya again will have to be tempered. He’s not sure how time travel works, but he has the sneaking suspicion that one wrong move could unravel everything.

    Ilya is alive.

    Just the thought of it is enough to make Shane crack his first smile in a year.

    AU in which Ilya dies in the Centaurs' plane crash. A year later, careless with grief, Shane drives his car into a blizzard and wakes up in Boston, in 2016.
