Summary
Everyone knows the stories. Children learn them alongside road safety and emergency numbers: if your soul mark disappears, tell someone. It means something has happened. There has been an accident, or an illness, or a Quirk gone catastrophically wrong. Somewhere in the world, the person whose life had been tied to yours has ceased to exist, and fate, efficient as ever, tidies away the evidence. There are support groups. Therapists who specialise in unmet soulmate loss. Memorial charities founded by people who had never managed to meet the person they mourned.

Peter was quiet. He couldn't understand why he was taking a request that sounded so odd, so seriously. Then he offered, “Even if I don’t believe?”
Percy nodded, still serious, “Whilst I’m not as much of a religious fanatic as my family would like me to be, I know there’s power in a prayer. It just has to be to the right… divine being I suppose. So, promise me?”
“I promise.”
