Lightning doesn't strike the same place twice. Until it does. Castiel knows all too well that the path to hell is paved with the purest of intentions. Freshly flung out of the Empty with Gabriel as the angel (devil?) on his shoulder, the brothers wake up in unfamiliar vessels as an invisible string pulls Cas back to his righteous man. When sparks fly for the second time, will he finally be able to bask in the warm embrace of Dean's love or will his deception burn it all down?

Dean went to hell before ever meting Sam at Stanford. He never dragged him off on a hunt to find John.
Sam had left, and Dean was too ashamed. Felt too unheard and abandoned to ever think about facing Sam again.
Dean, instead of entering Sam's life once again, became a ghost.
He stayed with John who eventually left, uncaring of his eldest pain.Soon the depression became beyond bearing, and though Bobby tried his best, Dean ends his life.
He burns, he burns until his mind is incinerated and hope is but a mere illusion.

Cas leans back into his space, sturdy. "I promise, I would not do anything that would put myself or our family in danger."
Dean laughs at the absurdity of it all. "So what you said, about me still be being me. It's not true then?" Cas doesn't respond. Waves of grief wash over them, it's a wonder Dean can still breathe. He inhales. "Cause then you wouldn't kiss me. You wouldn't kiss me. I wouldn't want you to kiss me."
Cas does anyway. The darkness doesn't come.

There’s an archangel in Dean’s head and strangers from another universe in his house. His kid is sick, his mother is young and aloof, and to make matters worse, his best friend is keeping secrets. Again. Only this time, Dean finds out about Castiel's deal with the Empty, and he's got a pretty solid idea about what (or who) might trigger it. Knowing full well Cas must stay miserable to stay alive, Dean makes his move.
This is the way they can have each other. No matter how much it hurts.

When the hellhound came to take his soul and drag it down to Hell, Dean Winchester was expecting that to be the end. He didn’t truly want to die in the end, but he did. He went to Hell and that would be it, end of story. Eternal burning, endless suffering, little red guys with horns and tails poking him with little pitchforks forever, the whole package. For the rest of his soul’s vast and incomprehensible existence. Endless. Until, of course, it ended.
Whatever had pulled him out of the Pit, it must've fucked up badly because what Dean was having to live with now... it was a Hell of its own.

The stranger tilts his head as if he’s puzzled. “I suppose,” he replies haltingly. “I am Cast—”
“Yeah, well, Cas,” Dean interrupts hostilely, “why don’t you tell me what you really are?” He hefts the cross in his arms, ignoring the sting of his shoulder as it stretches. “Any chance you’re somethin’ I can kill with a stake?”//
