Summary
One week ago, Kris nearly destroyed the world. Seven days ago, they took a stupid, selfish shot in the dark, throwing away all the plans they had so meticulously prepared in favor of one last, desperate gamble. One hundred and sixty-eight hours ago, they finally sealed the shelter’s Dark Fountain for good—and miraculously, thanks only to their friends, nobody had to die.
But more importantly: sixteen hours ago, Susie, apparently, went out with Noelle for an ice cream date and neither of them told Kris about it beforehand.
By all accounts, that should be fine. That should be not a big deal, because Susie and Noelle are girlfriends, and girlfriends go on dates with each other. And, typically, girlfriends aren’t expected to invite regular friends to join in on those dates. Especially not friends who lied to both of them repeatedly and nearly ruined everything, everywhere, forever.
The cruel truth of the matter, though, is that Kris is extremely not fine.

Like okay. Kris literally said two days ago that they would go to the festival with her. Like to her face and everything. That was a done deal. So them not being here was pretty freaking weird.

But here? Hearing her hit notes with force she would never use in a church hymn? Their breath hitched.

“An apple from Kris, huh?” Berdly commented. That seemed like a pretty odd comment, but then again, Kris usually gives her an apple before Berdly gets to her table. So of course he didn’t know. “Whew, they are laying it on thick. I didn’t know they had it in them.”
What. What did he mean by that? “Pardon?”
“Surely you understand the implications.” Berdly says.
“The implications.” Noelle repeated. “Of… apples.”

“I mean, I guess I deserve it.” They brought their hand behind their neck. “I've been messing with you for as long as I can remember. Gotta say though, this is pretty mean for a prank.”
“What? Prank? Wait, Kris-”
“Like, I've gotten this literally beaten into me, I still get headaches from looking at wiffle bats, but there’s just stuff you shouldn’t joke about. Love is definitely one of them.”
“Kris.”
They turned to her and forced a smile, raising four fingers. “Four out of ten. The letter was a pretty good set up, the lake’s a good location, and you get points for the absurdity, but this is pretty mean.”
“Kris!”
“Hm?”
“I’m? Not joking???” She said with a baffled expression. “I’m being serious here?”
