Summary
A letter from the imperial palace arrived early in the morning.
In front of the gathered clans and hundreds of cultivators, the letter was read: His Imperial Majesty congratulated the Yiling Laozu and the late Empress Dowager's clan, Gusu Lan, for their betrothal.
With the emperor's announcement, the decision was made for them and their fates were sealed.
(Or: The first time the Yiling Laozu was married, it was to Nie Huaisang. The second time, he was obliged to take Hanguang-jun as his second husband.)

Summary

Summary
Thirteen years after the disappearance of the Wen Remnants, twelve years after the official defection of Lan Wangji from the Gusu Lan sect, and ten years after the establishment of the Yiling Wei sect, the Cultivation world seeks the help of a man they have forsaken after the Battle of The Nightless City.
What they expect to find is a land of monsters and ghosts, led by man who is torn apart and worn out by his heretic ways, and the once-esteemed Hanguang-Jun in chains and tears.
What they do find is a thriving sect consisting of living, beaming people, a very smug and very happy Wei Wuxian, and a terribly content and – although as perfectly peerless as ususal – very jaded Lan Wangji.

Summary
Modern cultivator, Wei Wuxian, dies in a train crash and is sent back in time to the period of Ancient China he had been writing his thesis on - transmigrated into his own body as a child, dying on the streets of Yiling. He has no money, no family, but a knowledge of modern cultivation and of the historical events that are about to unfold.
He recalls the recently-unearthed journal of a woman who was imprisoned in Cloud Recesses against her will, and decides that she’s a good place to start to find someone who might be willing to help him dismantle the corruption that had sent the Cultivation World into the Dark Ages so long ago.
Of course, he had no idea that the person he sought would be the mother of Hanguang-Jun, the object of Wei Wuxian's fascination (“obsession,” his friend had corrected), since he had first learned of his existence in the ancient texts he'd studied.
