Here, before the hearth smothered by ash, he sat on his grandfather’s knee and learned of Veilfall, the Eight, and the Heartcraft Kingdom’s founding. On the woven rug from Umbraso, now faded and threadbare, he pieced an old Pear Pal back together and made it chirp to life again. And there, by the coffee table leaning heavy on brittle teak legs, he folded his first paper crane, sending it off through the kitchen window bearing the weight of a wish. He can’t remember what that wish was, nor if it ever came true, but he knows that he never stopped believing in the power of wishes while he lived under this roof.
No, he knows precisely when and where the false promise of “hope” finally withered and died for good.

Summary
25 years after the balefire bombs fell, turning large chunks of the Korean peninsula into uninhabitable wasteland saturated with potent necromantic radiation, a team of crack scientists in a remote research facility in what used to be the South Gyeongsang province work tirelessly to try to find a way to return life back to their small corner of the earth, and have just finished a side project meant to further assist them with their research. However, after this project unexpectedly develops a mind of its own - six of them, to be exact – the scientists are forced to reconsider many things, about themselves, their goals, their creations, and what they thought they were willing to do in the name of the greater good.
